Van Cleef & Arpels Féerie Rubis Contradicts An Olfactory Stereotype (2015)

Van Cleef & Arpels launched a new flanker in the Féerie series inaugurated in 2008 called Féerie Rubis (2015), which aims to be a musky fruity-floral of character, a contradiction in terms a priori for many people...

It was composed by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu of Givaudan who also signed Féerie Spring Blossom, which was carefully crafted.

The eau de parfum has notes of red fruits including juicy redcurrant, velvety raspberry mixed with lychees, pink peppercorn, magnolia, freesia, and peony. The base features cedar wood, sandalwood and tonka bean.

For the brand, the sillage leaves the impression of a woman of character.

BOIS D'IRIS BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS (2009)

I must admit it: I’ve a penchant for iris fragrances. As long as they’re even just decent, I always like them a lot. It amazes me how versatile this material can be, and how many nuances it offers. It can smell warm and luscious, dusty and cold, “grey” and “red”, plushy and earthy, and always so refined and mysterious. Anyway, Bois d’Iris is surely a remarkable must for any fan of this material, probably even more than other more praised ones in my opinion. It explores the colder-dustier and more balsamic side of iris, pairing it with dry resins, warm amber, a very peculiar sort of “greyish”, massively incense-driven crisp woody note, and a sort of rarefied foggy pine-forest feel. So imagine a breezy, balsamic, woody and above all, dusty-powdery incense scent, completely unisex and actually quite dark somehow, or better say “cold”, peaceful yet somehow aloof. Almost “lunar”, I’d say. And extremely refined: the dustiness has some very fascinating sort of sparkling texture – “silver powder”, so to speak. Dior named a scent “Bois d’Argent”, but that name would be so better for  Bois d’Iris actually. By the way the two scents are indeed quite similar, but I prefer Bois d’Iris, for a couple of very simple features: less pretentious, more substantial.

What fascinates me about this scent is how it creates a shimmering, rarefied sort of “silver incense” vibe played on iris powder and resinous-balsamic woody notes, without using directly incense.  I mean, this fragrance smells quite incensey to me, but in a peculiar way, “incensey and not-incensey at once”. Maybe more than incense I should say “a whiff of cold, azure-grey smoky breeze scented with iris and luxury resins”, as it feels weightless and airy yet surprisingly substantial, balsamic, enveloping. Truly one of a kind, extremely enjoyable and fascinating. Shortly – if it wasn’t clear already – I really like this scent: it feels quality, it’s extremely sophisticated, it’s delicate but not light or too close to skin – just elegantly discreet.  I own other iris based scents, and this has definitely its own personality which makes it worth owning even if you think you’ve “smelled them all” when it comes to iris. Maybe a tad too expensive, but a true class act!

Van Cleef & Arpels First Rosée D'Or

The house of Van Cleef & Arpels is launching a new limited edition perfume of the fragrance First from 1976. First Rosée D'Or is a luminous and elegant reinterpretation, inspired by the luxury of rose gold. The fragrance comes out in September 2015.

The scent is made from fresh top notes which include aldehydes and bergamot, and has a floral heart of jasmine, white rose and ylang-ylang, followed by a soft base of musk, warm blonde woods and vanilla. The composition is signed by Nathalie Gracia-Cetto.

Van Cleef & Arpels First Rosée D'Or (2015)

Jewelry maker Van Cleef & Arpels are introducing a new flanker to First called First Rosée d'Or, which is inspired by the aura of rose gold...

The composition is signed by perfumer Nathalie Gracia-Cetto from Givaudan.

The eau de parfum opens on top notes of bergamot and aldehydes followed by a heart of rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang, while resting on a base of vanilla, musk and woody notes.

The nose previously authored Un Air de First in the same collection.

Van Cleef & Arpels Ambre Impérial (2015)

Van Cleef & Arpels are launching a new opus N°00506QB in their exclusive Collection Extraordinaire, which is dedicated to putting the focus back on perfumery materials, called Ambre Impérial (Imperial Amber)...

The new composition is signed by perfumer Quentin Bisch of Givaudan. Describing his ideas for the perfume, the nose explained,

"I imagined Ambre Impérial like the perfect association of different symbolic essences from the Orient, the mythical and historical craddle of perfumery. I carefully selected those precious ingredients which for me evoke the quintessence of an authentic amber, a blend of sensations at once sweet, spicy." (Our translation)

Perfumes amadeirados costumam agradar a homens de personalidade forte. Tsar é um exemplo típico de ame-o ou deixe-o.
Suas Notas de abertura são bastante verdes. A Artemisia ( Herbácea e amarga) se junta ao coentro e a lavanda dando um aroma forte e másculo. A Bergamota e o óleo de neroli dão a fragrância cítrico sentido bem no inicio. O verde logo se mistura com as especiarias cravo e cominho ( que tem freguesia certa ) e o lírio, Jasmim e a rosa deixam o fundo levemente floral.
O que vem depois é uma fixação amadeirada com o dominio do cedro e carvalho, o ambar deixa o fundo ainda mais forte e nem as notas de coco, patchouli e musk conseguem adocicar o perfume. A nota de couro é só um enfeite.

O resultado é um perfume muito másculo e forte, para homens de personalidade e que não costumam variar perfumes. Não é a toa que os clientes de Tsar são cativos.Para o homem determinado, elegante e sedutor. Particularmente parece a versão mais verde e intensa do Jazz, e diga-se de passagem, que perfume! Preferido de Donald Trump. O nariz por trás desta fragrância é Philippe Bousseton .
As notas superiores são artemísia, coentro, lavanda, notas verdes, neroli e bergamota;
Notas de coração são bagas de zimbro, cravo, estragão, raiz lírio, jasmim, cominho, lírio-do-vale e rosa;
Notas de base são de couro, madeira de sândalo, fava tonka, âmbar, patchouli, musk, coco, musgo de carvalho e cedro.

Um clássico amadeirado verde , assim como o frasco. Notas de abertura com a artemísia mesclada a notas verdes e  uma boa dose de lavanda, o que causa aquele tom herbal, onde alecrim , aroma de pinheiro e musgo predominam.
Passado alguns minutos o coração evolui com esse aroma herbal , mesclado a especiarias , canela, cravo,estragão e alcaravia. e termina em   nuances florais amadeirados ,
O fundo na secagem, amadeirado pelo sândalo e patchouli ,com a presença do couro e do musgo dando aquele ar mais clássico e elegante, como os perfumes daquela década, tornando esta ,Talvez, a fragrância de mais estilo já lançada pela Van Cleef & Arpels.

Sua composição floral-frutada foi criada por Emilie (Bevierre) Coppermann. A fragrância abre com frescos e suculentos acordes de pêra, casca de clementina e neroli. O coração engloba flores brancas de jasmim e flor de pêssego, colocadas numa base de âmbar branco.

Van Cleef & Arpels Rêve Enchanté

Rêve Enchanté is a new fragrance by Van Cleef & Arpels, which comes out in May 2015. The fragrance follows the original Rêve from 2013 and Rêve Elixir edition from 2014. It is inspired by spring.

Its floral-fruity composition is created by Emilie (Bevierre) Coppermann. The fragrance opens with fresh and juicy accords of pear, clementine peel and neroli. The heart encompasses white flowers ofjasmine and peach blossom, laid on the base of white amber.

Tsar by Van Cleef and Arpels (1989)

Summary: Van Cleef and Arpels’ late 80’s fougere offering, Tsar, was the house’s second of their four men’s fragrances and their most successful. Directly related to other sweet and aromatic fragrances of that period such as Jazz and Eternity, Tsarhas stuck around these last 25 years and despite its complex list of classic notes, still feels easy to wear and relevant today.

Perfumer: Philippe Bousseton.

Try this if you like: A scent that develops and unfolds over time; classic fougere fragrances (think lavender, leather and oakmoss); a bit of herbs and spice in your fragrance’s drydown; a sweeter scent that doesn’t smell like Rabanne One Million; 80s throwback scents.

Pros & Cons: First of all, Tsar is a classic fougere with a hefty dose of more traditional notes like geranium, carnation, leather and oakmoss. As a “modern fougère” however, Tsar offers up a sweetness usually lacking in older vintage fragrances. Tsar seems to retain a hint of the original Van Cleef and Arpels for Men (now discontinued), especially in the drydown. Despite being a fougere, the lavender is quite subtle and almost imperceptible.

Number of sprays applied for this review: Two sprays to the back of the hand from a vintage EDT bottle I purchased.

Fragrance strength: Eau de Toilette

Development: (Linear / Average / Complex) Tsar opens with a hefty dose of herbal lavender, citric geranium and airy juniper made fresher by the addition of neroli and bergamot. I am immediately reminded of a glass of gin or YSL Jazz at this stage. But Tsar’s opening also offers a modern sweetness that we find in scents from that period such as Giorgio Wings for Men or Polo Sport. Within 20-40 minutes the more herbal midnotes begin to blossom with tarragon, rosemary, carnation and cinnamon peeking out. Here the aroma loses its sweetness and shows its complexity. There is also a slightly grassy, green edge throughout the development while the drydown is fascinating with perceptible facets of coconut, amber, leather, and woods.

Longevity: (Short / Average / Long-lasting) Today’s two sprays lasted … a good 8-10 hours.

Sillage: (A Little / Average / A Lot) Tsar is quite a big scent and projects its sillage for a good couple of hours.

Note about the packaging: There are four bottles to be aware of: The original Tsar is housed in the same bottle shape as the current offering, an art deco rectangle, but in a solid green, opaque pate that recalls a semiprecious stone or marble. Next, the Eau de Tsar flanker was released in the same bottle, but translucent and pale green. In the late 90’s the scent was rebottled in a totally different, transparent, striated glass bottle with gold base and top. Recently, the bottle was replaced with the original, but this time it is a transparent, dark emerald green. The box, however, has remained largely the same, a green, rectangular paper box.

Where can I buy it? Found online for as little as $10 USD for a 30 ml original EDT.

The Bottom Line: Something happened in the 80’s; a revolution in men’s fragrance occurred. Aroma shifted away from the rich, earthy, spices and herbs of the previous two decades and towards the more modern aquatic, ozonic and gourmand aesthetics. Tsar sits comfortably in this transition period, straddling its 80’s predecessors and hinting at what was to come in the 90’s and 00’s. Launched just a year after YSL Jazz in 1988 and a year before CK Eternity in 1990, Tsaropens modern and closes classically. What I mean is that the opening notes offer a familiar sweetness that many will feel suits modern sensibilities while the drydown is much more traditional and of its time. This is a kind of “best of both worlds” scent and as such, is not to be missed!

Upon initial application and through its midnotes, Tsar strongly recalls Giorgio Wings for Men, another awesome bargain scent that I reviewed here. Look at Wings’ list of notes:

“Top notes are lavender, green notes, neroli, bergamot and lemon; middle notes are coriander, clary sage, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley and geranium; base notes are tonka bean, amber, musk, oakmoss and cedar”—Fragrantica.com.

Tsar is more complex and definitely richer with its earthier basenotes. But look at what’s missing in that list. Between the late 80’s and early 90’s quite a few notes disappeared from perfumery either due to regulations or zeitgeist. How often do we see coconut, carnation or caraway these days?

So, if interested in exploring a fragrance reflective of a modern turning point in perfumery, seek out Tsar. I can’t speak for the current reformulation, so seek out the opaque bottle. An inexpensive 30 ml should do the trick!

O perfumista é Bernard Ellena que entrou com tudo nos anos 90 no circulo VIP de perfumistas de renome se tornando famoso. É dele o Colors de Benetton, que foi sucesso absoluto nesse periodo. Atualmente assinou perfumes famosos como Beloved for women da Amouage, The Game da Davidoff, Ferrari Black Shine , Seductive Sunkissed da Guess, Jacomo de Jacomo Rouge ,Jaguar Women, Legend Pour Femme da Montblanc e White Jeans da Versace. O jeito Bernard é simples e envolvente nos perfumes em que assina. Prima por ser um perfumista que diversifica fragrâncias porém não busca elementos exóticos para seus perfumes.
Oriens é assim um perfume ao mesmo tempo chique, moderno, sofisticado mas usual. É doce na medida certa e conquista bem o publico que gosta de perfumes docinhos . As notas de groselha preta, framboesa e cassis se juntam a tangerina para fazer uma projeção inicial doce e atraente, quase magnética. A evolução é no floral do jasmim e flores brancas mas as notas de cabeça se sobressaem durante quase todo o domínio floral fazendo um delicioso floral\frutal. O Pralinê (leve cheiro de amêndoas) se mistura ao ambar e a baunilha e dão um toque de especiarias leve e o patchuli cuida para que o blend fique perfeito e a fixação impecável.
Resumindo é doce, levemente floral e com um fundinho delicioso de patchouli e baunilhas.
É apaixonante desde a primeira borrifada e simplesmente sedutor.

OBSERVAÇÃO: NÃO É PERFUME DE CRIANÇA!

Woody fragrances usually please men of strong personality . Tsar is a typical example of love it or leave it .
Its opening notes are very green . Artemisia ( herbaceous and bitter ) joins the coriander and lavender giving a strong and manly aroma. The bergamot and neroli oil give the fragrance citrus felt good at the beginning . Green logo is mixed with spices cloves and cumin (which has certain parish ) and lily , jasmine and rose leaves lightly floral .
What follows is a fixation with the domain woody cedar and oak, amber leaves background even stronger and even notes of coconut, patchouli and musk can sweeten the scent . The leather note is just a garnish.
The result is a very manly and strong perfume for men of character and that usually does not vary perfumes. No wonder that customers are cativos.Para the Tsar determined, elegant and seductive man . Particularly looks greener and intense version of Jazz , and say , in passing , that scent ! Preferred Donald Trump . The nose behind this fragrance is Philippe Bousseton .
