Davidoff Horizon

Horizon representa a liberdade, a aventura e a exploração.

Davidoff Cool Water Exotic Summer

by: Sanja Pekic

Davidoff launches its annual summer limited editions of the always popular Cool Water fragrances in a collection called Cool Water Exotic Summer for 2016. Since the original Cool Water from 1988 and Cool Water Woman from 1996, Davidoff finds inspiration in oceans and annually launches new, limited edition aromatic-aquatic fragrances. The new collection was preceded by Cool Water Summer Seas in 2015, Cool Water Coral Reef in 2014 and Cool Water Into The Ocean in 2013.

Cool Water Exotic Summer for men is a fresh and bright reinterpretation of the original with aromatic - citrusy and marine notes. It begins with sparkling notes of mandarin, enriched with aromatic juniper, basil and sage. Cool mint in the heart makes a prelude to the woody, masculine base of sandalwood. Available as 125 ml Eau de Toilette.

Cool Water Woman Exotic Summer, a fresh and feminine scent, begins with an aqueous character of melon. The melon notes develope to a heart of delicate lily of the valley and a bouquet of flowers. The base is made of rich and sensual orris root. Available as 125 ml Eau de Toilette.

Cool Water Sea Rose Exotic Summer for women is announced as an enchanting scent of intriguing contrast between bright and sultry tones. It opens with fresh mandarin, leading to the rich heart of roses. Refined woody notes of cashmere in the base provide depth to the composition. Available as 125 ml Eau de Toilette.

The distinguishing bottles of the collection are decorated with discreet palm tree prints, while their boxes show pictures of sea lagoons.

Echo (for men) by Davidoff (2003; 2015)

by: Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison

This is another in a series of bargain fragrance reviews, scents that may be found online or at discount stores for US $25 or less. Leave a comment below for your chance to receive a sample, shipped anywhere in the world, free!
Summary: Echo, Davidoff’s second take on the marine/ozonic genre, offers a surprising interpretation of metal, air and leather that wears more like a refreshing splash of cool water with melon than the notes might suggest, and is housed in a strikingly unique bottle. The current (2015) reformulation smells and wears exactly the same as the original.
Try this if you like: Aquatic, ozonic or marine-themed scents; watermelon; suede; cinnamon.
Pros & Cons: Echo seems an odd launch for 2003, a little late to the metallic, fresh trend of the mid 90’s. However, I’ve always loved the scent with its surprising metallic tang and sweetnuances. Despite a lack of fruit in the composition, there is most definitely a mystery watermelon note prominent.
And about the unique names of the official notes listed below - at first sniff, it’s hard to imagine those notes as translating to this scent. One might imagine a spicy, leather aroma and oddly, it sort of is; Echo is perhaps the freshest, sweetest, fruitiest leather and spice aroma one could encounter. Echo’s suede is not necessarily a prominent theme but rather a hint of a note that is so well-blended that it’s nearly unrecognizable. I had a similar response with CK Truth for men which included basil and patchouli but to me smells like juicy plums.
Echo has been criticized as smelling synthetic, common, and plastic, but praised for its good longevity, easy price tag, overall freshness and groovy bottle. Newly re-launched, the 2015 bottle sports the Davidoff name now in print letters vs the cursive of the original release. I could easily see it as a gender bender scent as well.
Notes: “Living liquid air, metal aldehydes and white suede,” Davidoff press materials. Fragrantica adds, “The base notes are: chili, nutmeg, black pepper, musk, cedar, sandalwood and white suede.”
Designer’s Description:N/A
Number of times tested:100+ times over the last 12 years.
Number of sprays applied for this review: 2 sprays to the back of my hand from a 100ml bottle I purchased (ca. 2015, re-launch).
Fragrance strength:Eau de Toilette
Development: (Linear / Average / Complex): I find Echo to be rather linear with no real development to speak of though I routinely feel like there’s a hint of cinnamon somewhere in Echo that isn’t listed in the composition. For some this simplicity allows the scent to be easy to wear; for others it results in a yawn.
Longevity: (Short/ Average / Long-lasting) I’m always surprised by Echo as the longevity is surprisingly good. I get around 7-8 hours with a few liberal sprays and find it lasts even longer on fabric.
Sillage: (A Little / Average / A Lot) I’ve received compliments and offered others compliments on this one. Not in your face, but definitely not a skinscent. Likely office safe.
Note about the packaging:A rectangular, transparent, sky blue, glass bottle whose surface recalls undulating water. The bottle sports a silver spray mechanism in one corner and is housed in a simple, silver paper box. As noted above, the current reformulation lists the brand name in print on the bottle and box rather than in cursive.
Where can I buy it?A 100ml EDT spray can be found online or in discount stores for around $20 USD.
The Bottom Line: Ah Echo, I am so happy to have this back in my rotation – nothing else wears quite as fresh and sweet while offering a hint of spice and suede at the same time. In keeping with the name, my experience with this scent is indeed an echo of the past, having first owned a bottle back in 2003 when it first launched, once more about 6 years ago before it went to my dad, and then again this year in its reformulation.
My first memories of Echo are via a mini bottle that I purchased and wore while in Okinawa. As such, Echo is associated with blue waters, white sands, fresh air and striking island landscapes. Isn’t it amazing how our scented associations can play such a strong role in our relationships with certain aromas? I remember finding it unoriginal yet totally fresh and addictive – the perfect easy aroma for a beach vacation. I bought a large bottle soon after and an accompanying after shave balm that I used as a body lotion. I left it behind at my dad’s house while on holiday there, only to return the following year to find my dad smelling, well, pretty damn good, a departure from his normal routine of Royal Copenhagen aftershave. “Dad, what is THAT?” I asked. “I don’t know, something in a blue bottle that your step-mother gave me,” he replied. I couldn’t argue that it was mine when I had so many others and he was so enjoying Echo. “It’s not sugary sweet,” he noted, “I hate that sweet stuff.”Hmmm, I find it pretty darn sweet.
After that, I had been keeping my eyes on Echo while at TJ Max, a US discount shop. You know how you put something into your shopping cart and then at the last minute argue that you don’t need it and so remove it, only to come back to it again on your next visit thinking you should buy it but then don’t? I was an Echo stalker. A few weeks ago I decided that at $20 USD I couldn’t resist. And so back in the rotation it goes and I just can’t get enough of it. I think it must be its familiarity that endears me to it as my partner thinks it smells like the laundry detergent isle. The thing is, I kind of love the laundry detergent isle and anything that smells like fabric softeners - here’s looking at you Giorgio Wings for Men (1993) and Van Cleef by Van Cleef&Arpels(1994) - is likely a sure win for me.

Cool Water Night Dive Woman de Davidoff por Veronique Nyberg

Cool Water Night Dive Woman Davidoff Feminino

Davidoff Cool Water Tender Sea Rose

Davidoff launches a new fragrance which belongs to the collection of Cool Water and which succeeds Sea Rose from 2013, Sea Rose Coral Reef Editionfrom 2014 and Sea Rose Summer Seas from 2015. In a pale pink flacon with rose illustrations, the new fragrance will mark the summer of 2015 with a composition characterized by floral-musk aromas. "The fragrance was inspired by the first rays of sun in early morning twinkling on the sea water surface. As the sun arises, a girl kneels down on the shore surrounded by luminous light and tempts the most intimate moment of the day: her secret meeting with the sea."
Luminous first rays of the sun are described by drops of grapefruit opening the composition, announcing a feminine floral bouquet in the heart in which elegant roses and jasmine blossom intertwine their petals. Sensuality and a cuddly finish are provided by musk shades softening bright notes of grapefruit and calming down the floral sweetness.

Zino by Davidoff (1986)

by:
 Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison

This is another in a series of bargain fragrance reviews, scents that may be found online or at discount stores for US $25 or less. Leave a comment below for your chance to receive a sample, shipped anywhere in the world, free!
Summary: The 2nd fragrance from the house of Davidoff – a rich, animalic and woody oriental - is probably the brand’s most successful homage to Zino Davidoff’s provenance as tobacconist without actually employing tobacco as a note. Thanks to the popularity of oud and incense fragrances of late, Zino feels remarkably contemporary despite its pending 30th birthday in 2016.
Perfumer: Unknown.
Try this if you like: Tobacco/sweet hay, lavender, animalic scents, earthy and spicy fragrances, woody aromas, the scent of a barn (yes, a barn).
Pros & Cons: About that barn comment…Zino was the first scent to fully take me back to being 7 yrs old, inhaling the aromas of a horse stall while cleaning hay.Picasso’s Minotaure was the 2nd to offer this accord and I find some similarities among the two with Minotaure offering much lighter fruit/green/hesperidic topnotes whereas Zino is citric lavender. As there is nothing fresh or particularly youthful about this one (compared to Cool Water, for example), I’d say it skews to a slightly more mature audience. Absolutely unisex for those who appreciate woody orientals.
Notes: “It starts of stingingly fresh with lavender, palisander, clary sage and bergamot at the top. The heart is composed as an elegant floral bouquet of geranium, rose, lily-of-the-valley and jasmine. Warm and manly components lock the composition down: patchouli, cedar wood and sandalwood, along with a tender touch of vanilla. The fragrance is named after the founder of the brand.”—Fragrantica.com
Designer’s Description: Not available.
Number of times tested: 100+ times over the last 30 years.
Number of sprays applied for this review: 2 sprays to the back of my hand from a vintage bottle I purchased.
Fragrance strength: Eau de Toilette
Development: (Linear / Average / Complex) Zino is a bit dry and herbal green (sage and patchouli) at the start but becomes nearly gourmand (vanilla) by the drydown.
Longevity: (Short / Average / Long-lasting) I get around 8+ hours from only two sprays; I can still smell it on me the next day.
Sillage: (A Little / Average / A Lot) This one has gotten noticed (and compliments!) but I find it a little overwhelming upon initial application.
Note about the packaging: Dark amber glass bottle in the traditional Davidoff style with beige cap and gold lettering, all in a yellow/beige paper box.
Where can I buy it? I found my 1oz EDT tester bottle online for $10 USD.

The Bottom Line: Ok, so as this is my second Davidoff review this autumn, maybe it could be fun to explain who this guy was! Born to Jewish Ukrainian tobacco merchants at the turn of the 20th century, Zino (1906-1994) grew up between Kiev and Geneva and also spent time studying the cultivation of tobacco in Central and South America. He later took over the family business, developed the first desktop humidor, and became a prolific writer about tobacco…and the rest is history! The first fragrance was launched in 1984 with moderate success and Zino and Cool Water soon followed, the latter cementing the brand name as a fragrance house as much as a tobacco house.
Davidoff’s second eponymous fragrance straddles the boundaries of traditional men’s perfumery like Azzaro pour Homme (herbal, woody lavender) with the at-the-time trendy amber/oriental theme made famous in scents like CK Obsession and Hermes’ Bel Ami. These genres of scent quickly became dated with the advent of marine/ozonic and unisex fragrances and so Zino disappeared from view, eclipsed by 1988’s Cool Water. It has never, however, been out of production and I find it curious that Coty chose to keep it around for a bit when so many of its contemporaries have faded.
One of the great curiosities of Zino is its notable leather/tobacco accord despite the fact that the composition employs neither leather nor tobacco. Perhaps the vanilla, patchouli and woods steer this one in that direction. For those who miss the incrediblePatou Prive (1994) by Jean Kerleo, Zino still manages to be a close cousin. However, a quick look at the Davidoff fragrances website suggest that Zino is actually no longer in production.
Zino (the fragrance) was reformulated a few years ago when the brand license changed hands (now part of Coty Prestige); look for the Zino Davidoff name completely in cursive script at the front bottom of the bottle to identify an original bottle. I have sampled both, however, and am happy to say that the reformulation is surprisingly successful in its similarity to the original, if not equally as rich.
