The Nose Knows by Forbes

Yann Vasnier exudes French cool. A taciturn Breton partial to Givenchy suits and vacations in St. Martin, he frequents such à la mode nightspots as Manhattan’s Boom Boom Room and Parisian cult favorite Derrière.

The man’s got talent, too: His 11th floor office in midtown Manhattan holds hundreds of bottles of perfume components that Vasnier will alchemize into scents for Givaudan, the world’s largest fragrance and flavoring company. It’s a high-profile job, at least among a certain elite: Vasnier’s latest creation, Marc Jacobs Bang, was advertised by Jacobs himself, lounging nude on a Mylar bed strategically holding a giant bottle of the juice on his lap.
Outside the cool-kid set, Vasnier is all but invisible. It’s a familiar feeling for dozens of high-end perfumers working today: Any mall rat can identify the smell of Clinique Happy or Calvin Klein’s CK One; precious few can identify the people who created them.

“I felt like I was locked in a closet,” says Ann Gottlieb of her days working as a perfumer. Gottlieb is now a fragrance consultant–she worked with Vasnier on Bang. As a “nose” she mediates between clients like Jacobs and the perfume designers who create a fragrance for them. (Perfumers must complete a fragrance curriculum, including courses in chemistry and biology, before earning an apprenticeship. Vasnier attended the International Institute of Perfumery, Cosmetics & Alimentary Aromas in Versailles, France. Noses–employed in-house by companies like Hermès or contracted by fragrance houses like Coty–are most often master perfumers who have gained a certain degree of success in the field.)
But the days of sniffing in obscurity are a thing of the past. Like couturiers and chefs before them, perfumers are stepping out from behind the brand names and becoming status symbols– and selling points–themselves. Some luxury labels hope that connecting the artisan to the aroma will sate buyers’ desires for the authentic, the handcrafted, the auteur-guided.
“You can’t just shove the fragrance in someone’s hand and say, ‘It’s new, you’ll love it,’” states Rochelle Bloom, president of the Fragrance Foundation. “You have to tell them what inspired people to develop it–who was moved to put these ingredients together.”
More importantly, as esteemed perfumers like Calice Becker, Olivia Giacobetti and Christine Nagel amass hit after hit, their followers–and their sway within the companies that employ them–increase. It’s helping feed a movement away from mass-produced celebrity lines to small, elite labels backed by prominent perfumers. Think Bertrand Duchaufour, the perfumer-in-residence for Eau d’Italie, or Christopher Sheldrake, who conjured hits for cult brand Serge Lutens. “Celebrity perfumers can make the success of the small brands,” claims Elena Knezhevich, who cofounded the blog Fragrantica.
Perfume blogs like Sniffapalooza and CaFleureBon also create the buzz in the marketplace. By providing a place for people obsessed with fragrance to obsess together, they allow enthusiasts to deliberate over the artistic stylings of Jacques Polge (Bleu de Chanel, Coco Mademoiselle) or Francis Kurkdjian (Jean Paul Gaultier, Narciso Rodriguez, Guerlain) and arrange to meet their idols at smelling events, seminars and awards banquets. In short: Perfumers now have groupies.
“I remember the first perfumer we had at a Sniffapalooza group, Maurice Roucel–he’s like a rock star to us,” says Karen Adams, who coleads Sniffapalooza from her Connecticut home. “We wanted to know what he was thinking when he created a fragrance.”

For Knezhevich it’s all about the passion of her favorite perfumers: “I just like it when people make something with their hearts.”
Both say they’ve seen a significant uptake in their ranks as the popularity of perfumers has grown. Still, there is division among the houses–Firmenich, Givaudan, International Flavors & Fragrances, Symrise and others–on how to handle celebrity perfumers. Some brands are happy to showcase them to fan groups–Chanel and Thierry Mugler, for example, have hosted the Sniffapalooza posse at meet-and-greets. For Coty telling a cohesive story has been key to the company’s most successful launches, notes Lori Singer, vice president of global marketing at Coty Prestige for Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs and Kenneth Cole. And the perfumer plays a significant role in that narrative.
“Yann has a certain taste level and a real understanding into the world of Marc Jacobs,” Singer explains. “He is able to bring that to life.”
Others are not quite as enthusiastic about giving perfumers more cachet. The fear is that if a perfumer becomes too much of a superstar, he’ll start making demands. “The oil houses love them, but they’re nervous about them,” as one insider puts it.
Then there’s Mandy Aftel, who opted out of that game altogether. She started Aftelier Perfumes in 1999 in Berkeley, Calif. as a way to source rare and exotic ingredients–100-year-old sandalwood, $12,000-per-kilo boronia flower, Indian choya nakh from roasted seashells–for all-natural perfumes unconstrained by the requirements of shareholders and marketing reports. She makes fewer than 300 bottles of perfume a year; pricing on the bespoke line starts at $1,100 for 0.5 ounces.
Aftel’s stubborn autonomy (she has refused buyout offers from several companies) has paid off: Her Honey Blossom was the first indie natural perfume to be named a finalist for a prestigious FiFi Award. While her sales are a sliver of the big houses’, they have increased every year and last year jumped 50%.
She’s beating the trend, despite professing that money is not her motivator. Prestige fragrance sales in the U.S. rose just 1% last year, according to research firm NPD Group. Total annual prestige fragrance sales in the U.S. were $2.5 billion, down from $2.9 billion in 2007.
“I’ve been very lucky,” Aftel says. “To have that creative excitement every day when I go to work is the most important thing to me. That matters the most–the life of an artist making perfume.”
It’s a long way from Marc Jacobs atop his golden pallet. But the roses smell just as sweet.

Best in Show: The Fragrances of Maurice Roucel (2016)

One of perfumery's brightest stars is undoubtedly the legendary Maurice Roucel, presently of Symrise. Roucel began in 1973 while working at Chanel as an apprentice and then went on to work at IFF, Quest, and Dragoco. He is the recipient of various accolades in the fragrance industry including the Prix François Coty in 2002, the French and American FiFi, and the French "Oscar des Parfums" Awards. In 2012 he was honored by the French government with the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He has developed fragrances for a wide range of brands including Bond No 9, Lancome, Dunhill, Amouage, Avon, Helmut Lang, Guerlain, Hermes, Ferre, Donna Karan and Gucci, to name but a few.

For a thorough list of his accomplishments, check out our Maurice Roucel page HERE. For a complete list, visit Roucel's Wikipedia page.
Below, Fragrantica's international editors discuss five of their favorite Roucel compositions accompanied by numerous Honorable Mentions. We hope you enjoy this overview of the perfumer's work and encourage you to share your own favorites in the comments below.

HELMUT LANG
EAU DE COLOGNE (2000; 2014)

"I walk in, I see You, I watch you, I wait for you,
I tease you, I breathe you, I smell you on my skin" -Helmut Lang
As much as Austrian designer & artist Helmut Lang used unconventional materials for his famous designs, it doesn't surprise he had a rather unconventional fragrance concept in mind when he met with Maurice Roucel in New York in 1998: "He wanted the scent of his lover's sweat …erotic, musk, skin. […] He had a clear vision; a good brief and he used his minimalist design and aesthetics for both the marketing and the bottle,“ Maurice Roucel remembers in an interview with ÇaFleureBon. To the utter dismay of many fans, the Helmut Lang fragrance line was discontinued in 2005, but in 2014 prayers of many Lang devotees were finally answered with a reissue of Maurice Roucel's musk masterpiece.
While most Eau de Cologne usually play on the clean and refreshing side of scent, Helmut Lang's Eau de Cologne is a Janus headed creature. Crisp and herbal headnotes of Lavender, Rosemary and Artemisia mingle with Petit Grain in a typical barbershop cologne overture on the one side, but where a cologne like 4711 ends, Helmut Lang Eau de Cologne starts its metamorphosis into a slightly sweet, postcoital, between-the-sheets sensation. Perfectly starched lavender linens with a hint of bleach on top begin to get somewhat disheveled. The impeccable cleanliness erodes into powdery Heliotrope, creamy Sandalwood, and a musk which is laced with a hint of waxy wool. The final throws eventually emit a tiny bit of cumin, that adds a warm "lived in" feeling to an overall cozy and clean scent that is officially referred to as "The calm of the morning after. Complex, familiar, inviting" which hits the nail on the head.

EDITIONS DE PARFUMS
DANS TES BRAS (2008)

By: Yi Shang
Surrounded by mostly his popular commercial pieces, like DKNY Be Delicious, Guerlain Insolence to name a few, I always had this odd assumption that Maurice Roucel’s work is like those whimsical and bright paintings you’d see mass produced on Hallmark greeting cards. This is until I got utterly overwhelmed and transcendent to a bizarrely mesmerizing surreal world by Dans Tes Bras.
Dans Tes Bras has arranged a usual array of popular perfume notes into one of the most unusual scent experience. Predominant musk, heliotrope, pine, and violet, this could easily create some chilled aromatic Christmas holiday charm; but instead I got something like damp earth and all that wonders it can bring. Later on the whole scent settles and reveals the most smoothing, velvety warm musk. Quietly mesmerizing! Such smell is not typically showy or perfume-y per se, and its power needs no decoration. At once I felt I could finally understand why my dog loves digging his nose deep into those wetland surface covered by wood chips, dry grass, leaves and all those nature’s microorganisms! This is how Dans Tes Bras makes me feel: in its presence, one can momentarily let go of artificially constructed popular aesthetics, and confidently embrace something that’s quite and deeply primal, exciting yet oddly making you feel at ease. It’s only natural, so raw, and so good!

GUCCI ENVY (1997)

Gucci Envy came out in 1997, a time when we experienced a steady flow of elegant, clean and fresh perfumes on the market, like Clinique Happy, L’Eau par Kenzo, Cool Water Davidoff and Noa Cacharel, which still are highly sought after today. For me, Envy stood out because of its perfect equilibrium of fresh, spicy, floral and slightly sweet notes. I wasn’t surprised to learn that Maurice Roucel, who started thinking about this composition in 1984, needed 13 years to perfect his creation. In the case of Envy, the flower that inspired it all was the hyacinth, a flower that moved the creator but apparently was not a quick fix!
In the top, Envy is very green and quite refreshing. The fruity note of pineapple is nice and subtle here and balanced perfectly with peach, bergamot, magnolia and freesia. There’s a cool metal quality that’s captivating and quite unique. The initial green blast softens within the first half hour, while the heart develops the flowers I love so much: hyacinth, lily of the valley and iris - a bouquet of spring flowers! Combined with the lasting metallic notes, there is a frozen vibe which makes it perfect for hot summer days and nights. In the base, I'm left with sandalwood and musk that easily last all day on my skin. Chanel 19 is mentioned often in the comments as a similar scent, but where Nr. 19 is quite serious, Gucci is more lighthearted, although a slightly indolic element (from the jasmine in the base) keeps it from becoming too girly!
Sadly, Envy was discontinued, and although the flanker Envy Me is still on the shelves, (a fruity-floral with fresh and musky accords, not designed by Roucel); to me it’s not as mesmerizing as the original Envy. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a re-launch!

GUERLAIN INSOLENCE (2006)

Creating a contemporary violet fragrance was a true challenge back in 2006; Insolence by Guerlain is already celebrating its 10th anniversary and for good reason. Violet fragrances were seen as retro, reproducing the delicate, "shy violet" image of light face cosmetics and violet pastilles consumed by benevolent elderly ladies for sweetening their breath. Maurice Roucel, no shy violet himself, judging by the bold strokes of his fragrant compositions which actively paw their wearers to purring, chose to push the boundaries of both concepts to their potential extremes. He thus gave substance to a scent that can be literally tasted in the air, having the bystander engulfed by its profoundly musky violet-tinged hairspray note that announces its wearer from 2 blocks away, not just round the office corridor.
In Sigmund Freud's seminal The Interpretation of Dreams (1899) the otherwise asexual word "violets" takes on the much more sinister nuance of "violence" and/or "viol" (French for rape) in the context of a dream. Insolence must have been inspired by the very concept, having Roucel chuckle up his sleeves while thinking about it, no doubt cognizant to the word association double-entendre, added to the illusion of violet, iris and rose fragrances perceived as soft and delicate. It was possibly the bourgeois standing of Guerlain that disallowed the risky association to surface through the advertising, going for some strobo-lights dancing Hilary Swank. Predictably it was provocateur Tom Ford who saw the possibilities, when he baptized his own violet fragrance "Violet Blonde" which -of course- makes anyone think of a... violent blonde! Another missed train of fantasy for Guerlain, then, yet still a long-standing commercial and artistic success on the French brand counters everywhere.

LALIQUE POUR HOMME (1997)

The first men's fragrance from Lalique, Lalique pour Homme (Le Lion), is arguably its finest - a symphony of vanilla and woods accented with lavender, iris, amber and patchouli. While this scent seemed to cater to a more mature gentleman upon its release, a re-visit almost 20 years later illustrates the timelessness and approachability of Roucel’s composition.
Must de Cartier for Men, Pi by Givenchy and Lalique pour Homme. Those are my three “masculine vanilla” staples. Must offers ginger and cinnamon while Pi’s vanilla is accented with almond and benzoin. By comparison, Lalique’s vanilla is dustier, more citrusy, and very very woody; I appreciate the lemony freshness at top that eventually gives way to the more herbal heart set against the vanillic woods and mosses. Lalique is far less sweet or gourmand than the other two; perhaps this aspect of LPH is what leads some reviewers to suggest the scent as being suitable for an older gentleman?
To me, LPH (especially in EDP form) feels like it could have been the male counterpart to Guerlain’s Shalimar … that is, if we buy into the socially constructed notions of gender and scent. I also thought of a Shalimar pour Homme when first experiencing de Nicolaï’s New York. But I digress. If you haven’t already figured out who Maurice Roucel is and why he has earned his rock star status in the international world of perfumery, LPH is a safe and affordable place to start for both men and women. Now, Monsieur Roucel, oh how I would love a pure parfum version of LPH ….

"You Have To Give, Give, Give" - Nathalie Lorson On Lalique, Le Labo & L'Oreal

Lalique's Encre Noire enjoys what you might call a god-like status in the perfume community. Not long after it emerged in 2006, its uncompromising, legible structure of vetivert and musks turned it into a must-have for scentusiasts hoping to add a bold, animalic, yet polished creation to their collections. It soon achieved a cult following. And it's now something of a modern classic, as seen by the fact that it made it to Number 12 on the Basenotes Top 500 last year. In 2009, the brand gave us a female version of the scent. 2013 saw the release of a 'Sport' edition. But towards the end of 2015, Lalique decided to return to the perfume's founding principles to put together an 'Extreme' flanker. The person they recruited for the task was the composer of the original, Nathalie Lorson ofFirmenich, whose many credits include Cuir 28 for Le Labo, Autoportraitfor Olfactive Studio and Black Opium for YSL.

When the veteran perfumer - who has worked alongside the likes of Jean-Louis Sieuzac and the "fantastic" Sophia Grojsman - popped into London for the launch of Encre Noire À L'Extrême, I took her back to the 2006 release and asked her whether its formula really is as simple as it seems.

Nathalie Lorson: Yes, it is. Vetivert and musks. But there are different facets of the vetivert. For example, natural vetivert has a grapefruit effect. So I reinforced it with some grapefruit. I played with different facets of the vetivert.

Persolaise: Did you have any idea the scent would turn out to be so successful?

NL: No, because Lalique was not such a well known brand in perfumery. What I wanted when I made Encre Noire was to do something different. I have a lot of money when I work for Lalique. So I used some quantities and qualities of expensive ingredients I cannot normally use anywhere else. When I got the brief for the men's perfume, I wondered which wood I could use for men. I thought vetivert was very interesting, because it was used very often, but in a cologne, with citrus. I wanted to do something different. I wanted to use the vetivert for its woody facet.

P: Was Encre Noire difficult to make?

NL: Yes, it was very difficult, because it is a very simple formula, so you have to have good quality and good proportions. It was difficult to adjust everything. And it was really very different from what you had on the market 10 years ago. And the client dared to go with it.

P: I hear from perfumers that the pace of work at the major companies is extremely hectic at the moment. Would you agree with that?

NL: Yes, but it depends on the client. Not all clients are the same. For example, Lalique gives us more time. It's not so rushed. But with L'Oreal[for whom Lorson made YSL Black Opium], on each day, you have to make some mods. It's completely different.

P: You've made a few compositions with Le Labo. What's it like working with them?

NL: It's very interesting, because they don't care about the price, a little bit like Lalique. You can really play with the ingredients you want. It's freedom for us. It's real team work. Very free.

P: Do you think the situation will be different now that they've been bought by Estée Lauder?

NL: Sure. It will have to be different. Before it was just two guys. It's not the same now.

P: You made Black Opium as part of a team, together with Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc. How does that set-up work?

NL: We worked for four years on Black Opium. As you can imagine, you can't work by yourself for four years on one perfume. And with L'Oreal you have to give, give, give. They wanted to have an American vision, because it was a very big project and the USA is very important. So at the end, they asked me to work with an American perfumer.

P: What's an "American vision", olfactively?

NL: I don't know. Maybe it's not olfactive. Maybe it was just reassuring for the client to have someone who succeeded in the US.

P: But in practical terms, how does the team arrangement work? Do you each work on separate components?

NL: No, we smell together. The starting point was my idea. And for example, the client may say, "It's not strong enough. It's not floral enough." Each of us made some experiments. Then we smell together and choose what we prefer. And then we show the client one or two versions. And then we continue from the version the client prefers. Working in a team can be very enriching, but the thing is that you must not lose your own idea, because if there are too many people, one will go one way, and another one another way, and you lose your idea.

P: If a perfumer was tired when they were working on a project, do you think you can smell that in the final product?

NL: Yes, you can sometimes. Sometimes, you can see that if they had had more time, they could have finished the perfume better, and created a better harmony between the ingredients. But sometimes, the problem isn't time. It depends. Sometimes it's the people you have in front of you. They have to agree on what you're making. They are clients. I am not an artist. I have to work for someone else. So I have to find a way to not be frustrated and to make my client happy.

P: On how many perfumes are you usually working at any given time?

NL: I have 10 or 15 projects on my desk. It's a lot, but I don't work at the same level on each of them. At the end of a project, if you really want to concentrate, and really be 'inside' your project, it's difficult.

P: Would you have liked to have been an in-house perfumer for a single brand?

NL: No. It's too narrow. At the beginning it would be okay, but then you would be alone. And you need to work for different brands on completely different things to have open eyes. For example, on my desk, I see all the different projects for the different brands. I get a feeling for the trends.

P: So, you think your work would have suffered?

NL: I'm sure. I think it's very interesting to have an open vision, to see differences, to work with Lalique or Le Labo or Lauder.

P: With which perfumer would you have loved to work?

NL: Edmond Roudnitska. Eau Sauvage is fantastic.

P: What do you think he'd say if he saw you in your Firmenich lab?

NL: Oh, I'm sure he would say we are completely crazy. We don't have time to do the right maceration.

P: Finally, I've always wondered: how does it feel if you've made several modifications of a perfume - possibly hundreds - and then suddenly the client turns around and says, "You know what, Nathalie. I really love version number 4." Is that frustrating?

NL: It depends. If I agree that number 4 was the best, then no problem. But sometimes, a client goes back to an early version which was not good. That happened to me one time. The client said, "I want that." It was a flop. And it had my name. I'm not the one who decides what is chosen, but it has my name.

Eros Pour Femme Versace Feminino

He has a high artistic sensibility that pushes him to study the Fine Arts in Geneva and then join Firmenich in 1970 after reading an article on perfume. He studied raw materials, holds projects and creates worldwide famous best sellers. In 2003, he received the prestigious Francois Coty best perfumer’s award
Three words: fluidity, transparency and power. Alberto Morillas proclaims a self perfumery where each creation is an opportunity for questioning and start from scratch.
Born in 1950 in Sevilla, of Andalousian heritage, Alberto Morillas' "hidalgo" class penetrates you with his sharp and gentle blue eyes.

After 2 years at the school of Beaux Arts of Geneva, he joined
Firmenich in 1970 as a young perfumer. Mostly self-trained, Alberto developed his own style from the very beginning. In his mind, he pictures scents as colors and forms he can manipulate freely. His creations are spontaneous and numerous and do not follow any set of given rules. Alberto has no limits either in the generous ways he uses raw materials or in the amount of time he devotes to his passion. His strong signature is always recognized by the fragrance amateur.

When he is not creating scents, he spends his time contemplating in the family garden or indulging in luxurious pleasures. Alberto also has his own high-end candle series Mizensir. All of his candles have awesome and uncompromising scents he created (of course) and are available at
Colette in Paris.
