AURA MUGLER de Mugler (2017)

AURA MUGLER Mugler for women

* Aura não me agradou:

* Aura não é intenso:

Review Angel Muse (Quentin Bisch; 2016) & A*Men Pure Tonka (Jacques Huclier; 2016) from Thierry Mugler

Persolaise

The soundbites
If A*Men Pure Tonka were a colour, it would be a near-black purple.
If it were a piece of music it would be In Da Club by 50 Cent.
If it were a fashion accessory, it would be a wide, heavy, bronze-coloured bracelet.

If Angel Muse were a texture, it would be the softness of caster sugar.
If it were an item of clothing, it would be a baby pink, backless t-shirt.
If it were a place, it would be a spot a few yards away from the entrance toCharbonnel & Walker on Bond Street.

The reviews
Mugler's flankers tend to fall into one of two camps: they either add an entirely novel twist to the original perfume or they exaggerate one of its existing facets. Last year's A*Men Ultra Zest was an example of the former, so it's not surprising that this year, for their masculine release, they've opted for the latter. A*Men Pure Tonka (put together by Jacques Huclier) is our familiar, fuzzy-chested demon from 1996 - with his coffee, cocoa and patchouli - except that here, he's grown an equally fuzzy beard. The patchouli, although still present, has been trumped by an oversized coumarin note (the substance being one of the main constituents of both the lavender and tonka beans cited on the official notes list), creating an effect that is literally bittersweet. Even as it tries to win you over with a coating of sugar, it delights in giving you the odd nip. He's playfully cynical, this chap: the kind of guy who parties harder than anyone else because deep down he knows the end of the world is just another Nicolashka away. In other words, he's entertaining company.

--

Equally worthy of your time is Angel Muse, Mugler's latest addition to their unstoppable bestseller, this time composed by Givaudan's Quentin Bisch. In the 20+ years since the original Angel sugared its way into our bloodstreams, tastes and fashions have changed, so it's fascinating to ponder exactly why Muse works so well as a more modern Angel. My theory's simple: the sweetness has been tempered with a sprinkling of 'healthier' notes. Yes, the syrup is still very much present, but it's now paired with a saltiness (hazelnut), a sharper citrus facet (grapefruit) and a more prominent dose of spices (pepper). This beautiful assortment rests not so much on patchouli - as in the original - but on vetivert, a material which, with its combo of smoke and liqorice aspects, has always balanced the syrupy and the savoury. In other words, Angel has gone all super-food on us. And she smells very attractive for it.

MUGLER Announce Fusion Of Brand Logos

Mugler_New_Logo.jpg
The New Logo
Mugler announced on the 22nd of February 2016 that the house are fusioning their perfume and fashion brands under a new, simpler logo spelled all in capital letters as MUGLER to accompany their development over the next several decades as well as expansion on an international level...
Previously known as Thierry Mugler, a more direct reference to the founder of the brand, it now aims to convey a more universal vibe.
The designer explained,
"This new logo rests on energy and modernity. I wanted to create an assertive visual impact, a timeless architecture. It is about the synthetization of a universe which will leave its mark on the creations of the house for quite a long time." (Our translation)
From the French,
"Ce nouveau logo repose sur l'énergie et la modernité. J'ai voulu créer un impact visuel affirmé, une architecture intemporelle. Il s'agit de la synthétisation d'un univers qui marquera pour longtemps les créations de la Maison."

mugler_old_logo.png
The Old Logo
The new logo was created by T. Mugler himself. The galactic, spaceship-oddity aspects of the old logo have been trimmed down to a minimum now kept only in the "R" and echoed in the "G" as well where subtle elements of dissonance can be deciphered representing the twisted touch of the creator and the hand of the artist.

Thierry Mugler Angel Muse

by: Sanja Pekic

In April 2016, Thierry Mugler will launch the latest addition to the famous gourmand, Angel, the "futuristic - gourmet" Angel Muse. As Angel from 1992 represented the first gourmand perfume, so is the new edition announced as the first gourmand scent of vetiver for women.

New fragrance, new bottle, new codes: a shock wave is shaking up the Angel galaxy. Angel MUSE, the new Eau de Parfum you will hate to love.”

Angel Muse is here to renew the style of the gourmand fragrance genre. Its accord is luminous and not too sweet; it gradually develops into an elegant gourmand to stimulate our "olfactory appetite". The composition is developed by Quentin Bisch, containing a sweet accord of hazelnut cream with the elegant, woody and typically masculine character of vetiver balancing the creamy sweetness.

“What excited me about this project? Having to meet the challenge of inventing the Angel of today; looking to recreate an olfactory shock, a punch, just like Angel delivered in 1992… I had to understand and come to grips with it, without letting myself become too intimidated by this legend, this “masterpiece…
How would I describe Angel MUSE? Bright, delicious and elegant, with enchanting opulence... with volume. When I smell it worn, it feels like a cloud that overwhelms me, catches hold of me. It’s a delight, a truly ultra-feminine and addictive fragrance.”Quentin Bisch.
Notes: hazelnut cream, rose, vetiver
“To make an analogy, you could say that Angel Eau de Parfum is the star, while Angel MUSE orbits around the star and revolves as if around a galaxy.”Christophe de Lataillade, Creative Director for MUGLER fragrances

The bottle design is described as a “cosmic pebble", made of an elliptical, silver, metal ring with gently ambery, nude glass in the middle which reportedly evokes the surface of Mars.

The face of the perfume is Georgia May Jagger, who followed the steps of her mother Jerry Hall as the face of the Angel perfume line. The photographer of the campaign is Sølve Sundsbø.

The fragrance is available as a 30 and 50 ml Eau de Parfum.

Quentin Bisch.

Thierry Mugler Angel Eau Sucrée No.2

eau_sucree_no_2.jpg
Thierry Mugler are releasing a new limited-edition repackaging of Angel Eau Sucrée (2014) called Angel Eau Sucrée No.2...
eau_sucree_no_2_packaging.jpgThe outer look does not change dramatically and the contents remain the same. It is the flanker to Angel (1992) created in 2014 by nose Dorothée Piot for Robertet. The stripy, fun-fair stylings of the outer box turn a pastel pink while the flacon gets a pinkish cast on these pictures but on others look very much the same as the original bottle.
This ode to sugar and an old cordial still features notes of caramelized meringue served with a red fruit sorbet on a bed of patchouli and vanilla.
Angel fans are known for their loyalty encouraged by a network of workshops.

A*MEN PURE LEATHER BY THIERRY MUGLER (2012)

Well, this is an interesting fragrance with an interestingly polarizing reception among fragrance aficionados. My opinion on this is that it’s very nice. Nice and fascinating, and quite unique too, in its own subtle way. Does it smell like A*Men? Yes, it does, it’s 90% identical - it’s a flanker, after all. But still, it has some key features that makes it not redundant if you like or already own classic A*Men. First of all, it smells as a washed, lighter version of it; less challenging to pull off, more dry, kind of darker, surely more simple. A “thinned out” A*Men, so to speak – and that’s nice for me, since A*Men can get sometimes tough and overwhelming to wear. Second, contrary to other reviewers, I do get very clearly the leather facet here, and I really like it. I expected something different, a duller and more mainstream leather accord glued to A*Men like a drugstore patch, while I think that leather here is processed in a very creative and quite classy way.

More than a specific note, in fact, it actually really feels like if they gave A*Men a “polished leather look”, an overall “leather treatment” infusing it with a subtle, yet robust smell of new, tar-like, oddly sweetish polished leather. Obviously the “leather infusion” mentioned on the box is marketing nonsense (and knowing Mugler’s aesthetics, chances are it’s subtly ironic), but still I admit that that’s the effect: I think this does really smell like A*Men drenched in leather. And again, I must stress that for me the leather feel here is quite realistic, unusual and surprisingly well put together. Synthetic, sure, but that’s the smell of most of todays’ leather goods treated with chemical agents. And I guess that many people don’t get the leather facet because they’re looking for some more common, standard leather note, while here leather is kind of “all over” – it’s the ambiance, the frame itself, so you’ve to, say, “zoom out” and look at the entirety of the scent to get it. That’s my reading of this scent. Besides the all-over leather effect, the rest is quite A*Men with no particular variations except for a fresher and thinner look – if you aren’t familiar with that masterpiece, then imagine a bizarre musky-minty-soapy gourmand bomb with lavender, resins, tonka, fresh edges and a dark patchouli-cocoa base. Imagine that, sprayed on a new pair of leather sneakers.

The more I wear this clever pastiche, the more I like it, and I think the subtle yet very competent and creative leather variation is remarkable, and I’m afraid quite underrated (or even more sadly, just snobbed because “it’s Mugler”). If you see it with an “out of the box” approach, and take it as the crazy gourmand oddball drenched in subtle leather that it is, then it’s more valuable and creative than the majority of “avantgarde” niche leathers. It has some cheap facets, but they’re fun – and so is this scent, nothing particularly refined and probably not that versatile too, but fun, nice and unusual. Totally remarkable for the price.

Thierry Mugler ANGEL Passion Star

Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions Cuir Impertinent

Thierry Mugler has introduced the Nordstrom-exclusive Les Exceptions Cuir Impertinent, a new addition to the Les Exceptions series launched in 2014. The new composition, Cuir Impertinent, is announced as an addictive, surprising blend of smoky leather nuances, fine spices and warm amber, which brings a completely original olfactory experience.
THIERRY MUGLER LES EXCEPTIONS CUIR IMPERTINENT opens up with unexpected spicy notes of star anise, leading on to aromatic tobacco nuances in the heart. The base notes emphasize leather warmed with amber. Leather, which is a classic ingredient in perfumery, brings to mind Russia and the galloping cavalcades of Siberian horsemen. .
"I like leather notes and how sensually they linger in the wake of a fragrance. I thought it would be interesting to combine such a powerful base note with a touch of star anise. This novel accord creates a harmony of contrasts. The aromatic aniseed freshness of this spice plays a big role in enhancing certain aspects of the leather. Star anise acts as an agent of green freshness, adding nuances to the dark and sensual depth of the leather," said Jean-Christophe Herault.

Thierry Mugler Alien Oud Majestueux - From Spiritual To Fun - Perfumers As Brick Artists

Alien_Oud_TSS.jpg
Alien oud Majestueux on the background of a Southeast Asian Buddhist Manuscript - Agarwood bark would be used to write manuscripts on.
In Alien Oud Majestueux (Majestic Alien Oud), the signature of Alien is instantly recognizable. But now emerge new woody nuances, modern ones, graphite-like. It's also become much sweeter and liqueur-like. Very soon, the woody facet becomes intense enough to turn into an unmistakable animalistic presence smelling like a sugary black panther whose paws smell of rum and liqueur and whose pearly sweat on its short-haired, lustrous flanks is tempered by an invisible, cool powder...

Of note, is the new refashioning of indoles and sweetness. The black panther smells both dirty and clean, sweet and harsh.
Perfumer Dominique Ropion offers this new interpretation of an originally cool yet heaving woody white floral, Alien, which gets the kiss of passion from the intensely aromatic and popular oud. In 2015, we've felt for the first time that the top-down approach had become popularized for good. You can smell oud in locker rooms this year. It's no more quirky nor luxurious - it's become part of the ambient culture.
The material in its natural state is the result of a process of transfiguration thanks to a form of noble rot. Native evergreen trees of the Aquilaria and Gyrinops species get infected by the ascomycetous mould, which transforms the bark of the trees into a black, resinous and highly fragrant paste. But oud or agarwood is here reproduced as an artful olfactory accord rather than pretending to be harvested from a forest in Southeast Asia. We can applaud the transparency.
Like lipstick on the lips, oud has become the indispensable touch which makes up a perfume instead of a face. Oud is the new red lipstick of the fragrance world.
Ropion has been tempted to create an impactful, fire-engine red-lipstick oud, as we can smell it, by drawing some substance from his 80s white floral bomb, Amarige. In particular, this can be felt in the more accentuated honey notes of Alien Oud Majestueux. This new sweetness makes it be a closer cousin to Amarige than Alien eau de parfum is.
What distinguishes the new fragrance from Amarige however is the cooler, typically air-conditioned, cold white floral notes of Alien, which overtime re-establish their presence over this more recent twist. The indoles therefore smell more like the indoles of a take-no-prisoner 80s white floral bouquet, as visibly, Ropion has been looking towards the big shoulder-pad era to muse about the impact of this oud.
But Alien Oud remains essentially of its time, inhaling the Zeitgeist of this decade and century. Soon enough, the white petals steeped in honey turn into more of an impression of Oriental semolina pastry drenched in honey syrup and orange blossom water. This gourmand facet makes the fragrance be in reality a post-80s composition.
As the star fragrance of the brand Angel by Thierry Mugler has played a pivotal role in popularizing confectionary and pastry notes and it contains a note of honey too. The design of Alien Oud Majestueux coheres both with the logic of Dominique Ropion's personal palette and with that of the house olfactory heritage.
The oud in Alien started out in flamboyant style. It even went overboard to the point of suggesting potential social embarrassment, weather permitting. But while the throw of its flame burns red and vivid for a brief yet intense amount of time, it also switches to a more smoldering mode of combustion; the oud in Alien is both theatrical and domesticated. Oud imanisfests itself - it lashes out. Now, it is more of a warm, soft-to-the touch cashmere sweater like presence, another descriptor which coheres well with the original fragrance since Alien composition uses an overdose of Cashmeran called that way for a reason.
The ulterior nuance which surfaces is the medicinal facet of oud. Some people interprets this nuance as smelling of Bandaid. We would point out that it smells of leather Bandaids or "new car." On an olfactory level, this once again coheres with the camphoraceous indoles of the original Alien, extending it a bit more in the direction of the medicine cabinet.

yellow_lego_nathan_Sawaya.jpg

Perfumers as Brick Artists

We think it is fair to say that Alien Oud Majestueux is not exactly what you would call an "inspired perfume." It is a coherent fragrance. The brief was too professional. Spying on the street a poster for the work "Yellow" by artist Nathan Sawaya, also dubbed The Brick Artist because he uses lego plastic bricks to create his sculptures, it occurred to us that the perfumer of modern day is very much like a brick artist.
He or she is called upon to re-use immensely popular bricks which were first used in childhood. Some olfactory accords are even more like Lego bricks, with a great emotional quotient linked to experiencing them in the early stages of life. There is pre-fabricated aspect to perfumery-making. But there is also a playful one.
When Alien Oud Majestueux was first announced on The Scented Salamander, it elicited a range of reactions from amusement to bewilderment. This is because oud has become too much of a plastic-lego accord, infinitely permutable and buildable.
What we can retain from this experience is that if Alien Oud Majestueux is not exactly a moment of free, untrammelled inspiration, it is certainly one which can be perceived as a playful one. In a way, this new fragrance is like a toy. It is more than a gadget, which implies more shallowness, but it is made to please, amuse, while away the time and entertain. It is not meant to rip at your soul. The mysticism of oud is alluded to but it is absent, in truth.
The most interesting part of this new composition, and perhaps its most authentic aspect, we find, is the way in which the original coldness of Alien has been made to mesh with the cold aspects of oud. There is there an idea about developing cold yet sensual fragrances as a genuine genre.

Angel by Thierry Mugler (1992)

by:
 Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison

This is another in a series of fragrance reviews that asks, “How does fragrance transcend gender?”
Hello and welcome to “Gender Bender,” an exploration of aroma, gender and scented freedom. Though by no means do I personally prescribe to fragrance having a gender, sociocultural stereotypes about masculinity and femininity often prevail at the fragrance counters. Join me as I explore some of my favorite 20th century masterpieces of perfumery in my quest to address the familiar question, “How does fragrance transcend gender?”
Summary: One of the biggest game-changers in modern perfumery was undoubtedly 1992’s ice cream sundae in a bottle, Angel by Quest/Clarins for Thierry Mugler. Still going strong with too many flankers and variations to keep track of, the coumarin-heavy Angel has proven as divisive as it is popular with many a guy opting for the original version over the men’s counterpart.
PerfumerOlivier Cresp and Yves de Chirin.
Try this if you like: Sweet gourmands; chocolate, vanilla or caramel; patchouli; berry notes; Comptoir Sud Pacifique vanilla fragrances; Axe Dark Temptation.
Pros & Cons: Easy to find, easy to buy (old testers at great prices), and if you’re a gourmand fan, easy to love. Excellent longevity, big sillage and a compliment-getter. Some surprising facets such as earthy patchouli that have resulted in numerous reviewers deciding Angel is “too masculine” or too much like “body odor.” Numerous versions to choose from such as the original EDP, yearly flankers with highlighted notes (I love the Taste of Fragrance version with its amped up cacao notes), and the more recent EDT (ditches the heavier patchouli edge). The bottles are all quite striking and a little Angel goes a looooooong way. As fragrance paradigms have shifted, especially in “men’s” perfumery, Angel doesn’t seem the least bit “feminine” by floral standards.
Notes: “Bergamot, tropical fruits, vanilla, caramel and patchouli.”—Muglerusa.com; “Top notes are melon, coconut, mandarin orange, cassia, jasmine, bergamot and cotton candy; middle notes are honey, apricot, blackberry, plum, orchid, peach, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, red berries and rose; base notes are tonka bean, amber, patchouli, musk, vanilla, dark chocolate and caramel.”—Fragrantica.com
Reminds me of: There are so many scents that have taken cues from the gourmand paradigm made popular by Angel. To some extent all of the following have something in common with the Mugler creation: Dior Homme offers a similarly sweet and gourmand aroma minus the fruity patchouli notes; Rochas ManAnimale Animale for Men and Bond No 9 Nuits de Noho all offer similar cacao/woods/floral blends; Polo Red and Black XS (Man) offer the same fruity/berry sweetness as Angel’s topnotes;Hanae Mori ButterflySonia Rykiel (t-shirt bottle), Miss VarensMolinard Nirmala,Chopard Wish and V&R Flowerbomb also offer similar gourmand fruity-patchouli compositions.

Number of times tested: 500+ over the last 20+ years.
Number of sprays applied for this review: One spray to the back of hand from a bottle I purchased online at a discount site (ca. 2015).
Fragrance strength: Eau de Parfum
Development: (Linear / Average / Complex): Angel is surprisingly linear in its overall development; the citrus of the topnotes quickly fade to reveal a focus on powdery dessert notes with strengthening patchouli and musks.
Longevity: (Short / Average / Long-lasting) Angel in any of its forms may be the longest lasting perfume I’ve ever worn. Spray it carefully and you’ll still smell it on your skin the next day…and after showering, lol.
Sillage: (A Little / Average / A Lot) Angel is detectable; best to go easy on this one; probably not great to be heavy handed with Angel in offices or close quarters.
Note about the packaging: The classic EDP is a flat, faceted glass star with silver adornments/atomizer, blue juice, and housed in a powder blue paper box. The newer EDT arrives in a glass and metal “comet design” with the metal adornment wrapped around a diamond shaped bottle. The newest iteration is a three-dimensional glass star.
Where can I buy it? The EDP may be found online for as little as $30 - $35 USD for a 30 ml tester.

The Bottom Line: When Angel first launched stateside, paper cards with a perfumed wax/powder were distributed as samples in lieu of liquid fragrance. I remember seeing these on the perfume counters every time I went to Saks Fifth Avenue in Boca Raton Town Center circa 1992 when in my final year of high school/first year of college. At the time I had been enamored with Patou Prive pour Homme and Saks was the only place that sold it near me; so every time I went to Town Center, into Saks I went. The first time I actually peeled back the plastic and spread the waxy powder onto my skin I considered how much Angel reminded me of chocolate, freeze-dried, astronaut ice cream that was all the rage in the 80s. Nowhere on the card did it specify if the fragrance was for men or for women and despite the name, I decided it must be unisex. When compared to other popular fragrances of the time such as CK EscapeGivenchy Amarige or Dior Dune, Angel was decidedly NOT floral nor was it fresh or beachy. Rather, Angel’s powdery, honeyed vanilla drydown reminded more of 1992’s Burberry’s for Men or Balenciaga pour Homme. Gender boundaries in fragrance were definitely shifting.
When a liquid tester finally arrived, I doused myself liberally and considered how much Angel reminded me of Tristano Uomo by Tristano Onofri, a little known Italian gem that smelled remarkably similar to Angel’s drydown, just not as sweet. Oh how I hoarded those powder samples until finally, by some stroke of luck, one of the fragrance sales associates gifted me with a liquid mini and it was kismet! I had been wearing scents like Joop! HommeEgoisteMolto Missoni and Shalimarand was no stranger to sweet, vanillic, bold aromas.
When I moved to London a year and a half later, Angel had become my signature scent and I received constant compliments on my “cologne.” I had purchased another mini and was rationing it so as not to run out. Whenever anyone asked, I told them it was something from France, not wanting to divulge the mystery of my new scented aura. I wore it for evening occasions like late nights at Chelsea dance clubs as well as every day events like trips to Boots and M&S or to philosophy class at the local polytechnic. But by the time I had returned to the states, Angel’s popularity had started to grow and I could no longer claim it to be an obscure European scent. At that time, I had started working in department store fragrance bays at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom and had a chance to finally own a large bottle. I loved it…until it seemed that everyone else, and I mean everyone, was suddenly wearing my Angel. Though I embraced Angel for Men upon its launch, while many of my male friends found it revolting, my mother was completely smitten and preferred it to Angel (for women). I remember angrily thinking, “Who needs gender distinctions when it comes to aroma?”
Since my initial encounter with Angel over 20 years ago, much of the world has come to sample it and it is now considered by some to be passé. I have used summer versions, liquor versions, the men’s version, and numerous other flankers such as Eau de StarRose AngelInnocent, etc. Still, nothing pleases me more than the delicious, tempered, honeyed sugar tones of Angel’s drydown, a good 3-4 hours into its development. After traveling the world, I was surprised to see an almost complete absence of Angel and its flankers in Asian stores. Perhaps the composition is deemed to be too much for Asian tastes? I’d love to read your thoughts in a comment below if you have any info. As the fragrance world has embraced the sweet and gourmand trends with aromas such as Prada CandyDior HommeSpicebomb and 1 Million, I figured the time was right to revisit this gem here at Fragrantica in the hopes of spreading a little angelic joy to a new generation of fragrance aficionados.

It has to be tried to be believed and you can decide for yourselves—is it really angelic or actually a wicked demon?

Thierry Mugler Alien Oud Majestueux

por:
 Sandra Raicevic Petrovic
