Puredistance White: White and Gold

by: Serguey Borisov

I was not expecting any mail from the Netherlands, and a heavy package from the Puredistance company happened to be a pleasant surprise for me. Inside the package I found what can be called the most luxurious packaging of a perfume sample in the world: a lacquered wooden box (size A4), with a white top and black underneath. A brass oval plaquette with the name of the perfume brand etched by laser is glued to the top. A gilded frame inside with white satin on which the tube in a white branded silk bag tied with a black bow was attached, along with a very touching detail in the form of dry chamomile flower.
I found the perfume name only on the spray glass tube: Puredistance White. Well, after the mysterious Puredistance Black fragrance from 2013, it's time to release its antipode.
By itself, the fragrance is a warm, powdery, floral with soft woody musky halo—it smells like a classic and timeless first of all, by its form and content. It seems like a good friend whose face is very familiar, whom you have met quite often, and even greeted with a happy smile, but never can remember her name and surname.
Chanel? Dior? Guerlain? Caron? Houbigant? I could not nail a particular brand and perfume. Its familiar features are reminiscent of Christian Dior J'Adore in its different forms, Bois des Iles and №22 Chanel, Caron Parfum Sacre also, but is not congruent to any of them perfectly. So do not expect something original, unusual, that breaks the patterns of feminine fragrances from Puredistance White—on the contrary, it is one of the most comforting feminine fragrances, warm and embracing. An archetypal “mother's scent,” either perfume or expensive cosmetics.
From the accompanying booklet, I found out what was the main idea of the scent and the task for the perfumer Antoine Lie—he had to create a fragrance of happiness.
No wonder that it took 18 months for the perfumer to make Jan Ewoud Vos and his entire Puredistance team happy. A positive and wonderful aroma, the lowest common denominator of happiness—but we should remember “everyone understands in his own way what happiness is.” How does one pour in a bottle all the olfactory impressions of so many different kinds of happiness? The happiness of chocolate mousse and of your favorite song that makes you shiver all over? The happiness of champagne with strawberries and of a new smooth cool silk shirt on the naked body? The happiness from the warm embrace of sweet baby just awakened and a first step into the tropical warm surf on your well-deserved holidays? That's just incredible that Antoine did this!
The perfume was introduced at the latest Esxence in Milan
It's a surprisingly pleasant smell without edges. I like it, as does my son. My wife is very fond of it, and in my family we immediately began to recognize the smell. You know, I even conducted an experiment involving my one-year-old daughter out of curiosity (even better that she does not talk yet). I held her in my arms and brought perfumed spots on my hands to her nose for short periods of time (just to breathe). Would there be some reaction? Out of the four floral-powdery basenotes my daughter smiled only once, and it was—you guessed it—at Puredistance White! After six hours the smell was not strong or complicated, but that was enough for a child's smile. (Of course, the second and third time the experiment failed, but for the first time I felt like in a magical fairy tale: “did this really happen to me?”)
Puredistance White is pleasantly persistent (more than 10 hours as for now), but it is a completely quiet and long-lasting perfume. Like gently glowing gossamer, which is light and fragile, swaying in any breeze, but is stronger than metal of the same diameter by its characteristics. Of course, White is a perfume extract, like every other Puredistance fragrance, and made with quite a huge concentration (38%), so I would advise you not to put it on your clothes, especially on silk—the perfume leaves an oily shining spot on my skin.
It starts with sweet creamy monolithic accord, like luminous column of light, in which is mixed so much: lactone sweetness and tonka bean, silky flower petals and desserts melting in the mouth, the quiet sweetness of sandalwood and chamomile hand cream, a delicate powder aroma and the pleasant smell characteristic to expensive women's cosmetics. And gradually, individual sparks and petals show themselves in this tender radiance—some rosy flowers, a sandalwood material similar to Javanol, something sweet like vanilla and lactones, earthy shadows, satin silk iris, and a fluffy warm musk-centered chord. This column of light is not a pyramid of changes, it's a single obelisk of smell—mostly feminine smell, that is clear from the start. One could build some philosophy about musks as a prevailingly female material.
Strongly out of focus you could see a figure of a woman in the column of light. In her blurry outlines you can find any desired meaning: happiness, warmth, mommy, comfort, love, mutual dissolution, positive, comfort, peace. It is a self-affirmation mostly. The main thing—there is no negative feeling in this light.
Some years ago I was thinking about changes in modern perfumery. What happened to it? Why are some perfumes are so heavenly good and resonant to souls, and the others are just smells? I found the answer in the film Million Dollar Baby by Clint Eastwood. That's the Mo chuisle factor. Some perfumes have it but the majority of perfumes just don`t—people could feel it, too. I believe that during those 18 months White Puredistance became a part of life for both the perfumer and the art director. And I can feel that.
... And dry chamomile happens to be a symbol of Puredistance White fragrance, this artless sunny flower symbolizing happiness. The color scheme of chamomile repeats the fragrance motto, "A Dream in White & Gold."

Puredistance White - Dream of Happiness!

Puredistance, the fragrance house owned by founded by Jan Ewoud Vos tries to offer with their perfumes as many faces and inspirations as possible, along as to translate deep emotions and desires into compositions that will connect together into one whole regardless of the perfumer who signs them. The house was originally presented with the fragrance Puredistance I, followed by Antonia and M. After them, fragranceOpardu was launched, and last year fragrance Black, which poses contrast to the latest edition White by its name and composition.

"Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life."
- Omar Khayyám

Puredistance team sent the first samples of fragrance White to perfume bloggers and journalist, with an aim to share the joy of the new edition, and to hear different impressions to help them view their composition in a different manner. As they say: "The release of a new Perfume is always a big thing in our company. First because we only release a new Perfume every one or two years, secondly because the diversity and richness of the reactions and reviews we get from you always give such depth and detail to our Perfumes.
Each of the perfumes told its story and created special images and colors that we connected with compositions. Opardu was green, floral and very romantic in my mind,Antonia white-gold, charming and sophisticated, while M is ultra-masculine, fiery and irresistibly sexy. Last year’s perfume Black makes us think of darkness, but regardless of black it awakes us with bitter taste of pepper and hotness of leather. If Black is the night, White is the dawn, it is luminous and bathed in the first rays of sun, awakening us with the sense of peace, safety and freedom.
The creators and perfumer Antoine Lie wanted to convey the feeling of happiness and dream of gold with the new composition. How to describe the feeling of happiness with a composition? On my skin, the fragrance is not overtly radical, just like Black, but a powdery cloud floating very close above the skin. Powdery notes remind me of baby's skin, soft, warm and silky, of its baths and scented foam of shampoo. Powdery notes combined with iris root, which also leaves a powdery trace are lit with citruses and green notes which provide enough freshness that gives the impression of luminosity of morning and light coming from the morning sun. I do not feel rose as prominent but only its echo that provides femininity to the composition.
Warm and the carefree feeling  of the composition come from creamy sandalwood, which is on my skin keynote of the editions, in addition to powder. Lately, there have been more and more compositions that include solar notes (sunny notes), and in this case they would perfectly describe the effect that this fragrance leaves on the skin. The combination of green notes, flowers and citruses successfully created the effect of morning sun and dew that shine and relax our senses and trigger a feeling of happiness.
During the development of fragrance, powdery cloud replaces hot creamy notes of tonka bean and wood and a cuddly trail lingers on the skin, over which still hangs juiciness of flowers and citrus juices. The sweetness is well-dosed, sophisticated and moderate. It reminds me of fine marzipan carefully added to sweeten the "happiness".
Key notes that can be noticed on my skin are powdery notes, sandalwood, green notes and sweet musk. If I had to choose my favorites among perfumes by Puredistance that would be the irresistibly sexy Puredistance M and the latest, feminine, carefree Puredistance White.
One could say that White is one of those "safe scent" editions which will appeal to a wider population, but its "drinkability" is beautiful and highly refined. Trend of candied gourmet editions and popularization of Arab and distinctly oriental fragrances that "splash" mainstream perfumery really lacks in more carefree and feminine powdery clouds of iris that are sufficient for many smiles by subtly highlighting beautiful emotions and to paint our day with joy. The wish of Puredistance team is to provide their users with a simultaneous, direct feeling of happiness, which comes from pure perfume! And the harmony provided by that clean, honest and simple feeling of happiness today is very difficult to achieve, especially by high quality perfume composition. We are swamped with numerous information, which are often totally useless for us and our life, fogging the most precious thing, and these are the feelings of peace, happiness and serenity.
Perfumer Antoine Lie selected the following notes by creating fragrance White:

Italian bergamot
French May rose
Venezuelan tonka absolute
Italian orris absolute
Mysore sandalwood
Haiti vetiver
Indonesian patchouli
musk
The dream of happiness or dream in white and gold is a kind of rebellion against the global negativity in the world. The very composition will bring smiles to fans of the perfume fans and trigger positive feelings. And it's not just my feeling. I would not list fragrance White into scents for festive occasions and fragrances created exclusively for special moments, but would characterize it as a fragrance that is driving the force of happiness. It is suitable for wedding and for theater, but also for work, and walking every morning, that would awake positive feelings and brought comfort and beauty with the first cup of coffee.

Puredistance White

PUREDISTANCE launches a new fragrance White which will be presented exclusively at fragrance exhibition ESXENCE in late March 2015 in Milan. Fragrance White is announced as ‘a dream in white and gold’. The wish of the founder Jan Ewoud Vos and the whole Puredistance team was to create a perfume that would be so beautiful and positive as to provide an instantaneous feeling of happiness that flows and to seize all your senses.
Perfumer Antoine Lie who also created fragrance Black for Puredistance signs the new composition White and creates a golden dream, an intimate escape from harsh reality. As contrast to perfume Puredistance Black to which Antoine Lie provided a warm and tart composition to linger on the skin as a fragrant whisper, the new Whitespreads positive vibrations and cuddles the senses.
I really liked fragrance Black because on my skin in the beginning it develops elegant notes of rose, which is not prominent but skilfully enveloped and warm with tart spices (saffron, black pepper), incense and intense notes of dark leather, while being supported by a wonderful, sexy, oriental blend of my favorite Puredistance M. The fragrance is very peppery, dry and smooth, created of powdery notes (not make-up powder but talc aroma), extremely leathery, but slightly colder and more metallic than fragrance M. Juiciness which is not dominant originates from fruity accords of alcoholic beverage and leaves the effect of ‘expensiveness and fineness’. AS the fragrance develops, roses and intense spicy tartness disappear from my skin; leaving only sexy skin as key note tucked into soft powder (I like that part the most!)Puredistance Black fits perfectly into the collection by creating balance between elegant and light fragrances of the collection, such as Antonia and Opardu, towards the dark, masculine, ultra seductive fragrance M.
Puredistance have not introduced fragrant notes of Black so far, while we are presenting the composition of White on this occasion. This particular composition intrigues me because I like when luminosity, juiciness and energy conveyed by this fragrance reinterpret happiness and I can’t wait to test it.

Perfumer Antoine Lie worked on the formula of White for a year, using high quality and most precious ingredients in the world. According to Puredistance: "When people first tested the fragrance White, it made them smile immediately, and then they tested it over and over again by saying that White is full of happiness. Just as we hoped! In the era of global negativity the goal was to provide our clients with positive spirit by transforming the perfume."
