Weekly Roundup: Niche Premieres, Solar Fragrances

by: Elena Knezhevich

The previous week was fruitful in niche premieres. Perfume houses willingly oraccidentally revealed what they are going to bring to the exhibition in Milan. It would be too early to judge what will be fashionable in the upcoming season, but we will certainly discuss it after the show. However, looking at recent scents coming from the niche segment, I see that the powder trend (iris and musk) is continuing to conquer brands. Dusty, velvety, earthy, animalic and feminine, powdery accords have been in focus for a few years now, starting with a very nostalgic wave from the 1920-es. We carefully tested if we could get a feel for grandmothers' fashion again, and we actually liked it. Musk, violet and iris, still with a dash of nostalgy, are now tested to start a really big fashion.

NEW IN NICHE:
powder, musk, amber, suede, vanilla, ylang-ylang...
Inspired by the blooming cereus or the Queen of the Night flower, with a central  theme of vanilla.

citruses, champagne, iris root, tuberose, leather accord...
Waiting for your beloved in the romantic atmosphere of a warm summer evening. Two glasses of champagne are on the table, a cicade song is intertwining with jazz music. You wish it would last forever.
pear, fig, orange, grapes, iris root, jasmine, leather, musk...
How could we live without another new fragrance from Montale? This scent is absolutely unpredictable as far as smell goes, although it contains oud.

peach, incense, vanilla, saffron, musk, amber, tonka beans...
It seems that the singer of Napoleon, the house of Rance, has run out of close relatives as sources of inspiration, and began to dig deeper in Napoleon's love affaires. Eleonore is the mother of his first biological child, who was born after a short relationship while Napoleon was still married to Joséphine.
Fruitchouli is made with a real apricot extract and 100% natural patchouli according to its author, Andy Tauer.
It is fruity floral fragrance, that anyone can wear  anywhere.
lavender, oxygen, jasmine, rose, amber, vanilla, musk...
Gold but weightless, an intimate and truly precious fragrance, dedicated to the star in the Dragon constellation.
After all these pretty syrupy descriptions, please brace yourself for something bold and unconventional from Laurent Mazzone (LM Parfums):

Neandertal Perfume Dark & Neandertal Perfume Light Offer A Contemporary Whiff Of Prehistory (2015)

Neandertal_Dark.jpg

Confidential and new British fragrance label Neandertal have brought to fruition the central project they've been working on, whose aim is to recreate the possible scents that Neanderthales knew, transposed to modern days. Wait. What? This is about a historical fantasy. Neandertal Perfume Dark & Neandertal Perfume Light are two compositions by perfumer Euan McCall...
"If Neanderthals still walked the earth, how would their unique olfactory system influence their perception of perfume organoleptically? what materials would the 'modern' Neanderthal have an affinity with now?".
Perfumer Euan McCall responded to these questions informed by materials available throughout ancient history, present day, creating a symbiosis between product, materials, and this historical concept."
With the vogue and democratization of genetic testing which helps you assess the percentage of Neanderthalian genes you possess, prehistory might not be as far removed as we thought.
The flacons of perfume made out of porcelain are individually handcrafted by Kentaro Yamada. Each fragrance is limited to 100 copies and refills are available upon request.
Both compositions showcase a hot mineral accord meant to evoke the knapping process.
In Neandertal Perfume Dark, there is "a soft citrus and oddly transgressive iodine element that might suggest Neanderthals in present day."
Top - Pink Pepper WC, Tangerine, Tomato leaf, Hinoki, Aldehydes, Violet leaf & Grapefruit.
Heart - Caraway co2, Ginger absolute, Rose, Saffron, Tobacco, Guaiac Heart, Frankincense serrata co2, 'Leather' accord & Myrrh.
Base - Labdanum absolute, Patchouli MD, Vetiver, Cedar, Amber, Oud, Sandalwood, Cashmeran, Musk & Vanilla.
neandertal_light.jpg

Neandertal Perfume Light is said to be a sweeter, white musk take on the prehistoric brew.
Top - Marine accord, Aldehydes, Hinoki, Juniper, Lime, Grapefruit, Bergamot, Mandarin and Pink Pepper
Heart - Galbanum, Saffron, Caraway co2, Ginger absolute, Tobacco, Angelica, Frankincense and Myrrh
Base - Sandalwood, Vanilla, Tonka bean, Amber, Musk, Cedarwood, Styrax absolute and Vetiver.
While the concept is novel and striking, it remains to be seen how disorienting or evocative it truly is on the perceptual plane. A mainstream yet thought-out perfume such as Terre d'Hermès has made a flinty, mineral accord be of this day and age. Very early human history however is still an imaginary, olfactory territory less well covered by perfumery although the art always tries to make us be in touch with our primitive, instinctual sides.
Each 10 ml bottle + 10 ml refill is priced at £240.

KEMI BLENDING MAGIC Collection by Sergio Momo

by: Sandra Raičević Petrović

Sergio Momo, owner of popular and luxurious niche lines Xerjoff, Casamorati 1888, Join The Club and Oud Stars, presents his brand new collection named KEMI Blending Magic. The new fragrant line is divided by fragrance concentrations into Attar Oil, Eau de Parfum and Parfum categories. This collection plays on categories by mixing raw materials from the Middle East and by highlighting the opulence of the intense shades that each perfume provides.
Collection Kemi Blending Magic is inspired by alchemy as an influential philosophical tradition whose practitioners have even claimed since ancient times that it was the base of the strongest powers. Perfumes could not be created or formed without a touch of alchemy, and this ancient art was perfected till present day for the conversion of raw materials to the perfect revised form.

ATTAR OIL - ELIXIR, TEMPEST

Among the Attar Oil offer one can choose fragrances Elixir and Tempest in glass flacons as 15 ml. Elixir has an oriental-woody composition which opens with top notes of opulent flowers with copahu balsam. The heart provides a harmony of basil, juniper, nagarmotha and labdanum, leading to a mixture of oud, labdanum, gurjun balsam and ambergris. Elixir, as an elixir of life is also familiar as an immortality elixir, a stone of wisdom and it is also stated it is capable of creating life. Inspired by the elixir, the exchange of shades in this perfume extrait receives a whole new meaning.
Tempest opens with a fresh citrus top of lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, petitgrain and lavender, spiced with delicate accords of elemi and lemonish-tart ginger. The heart introduces cedar, nagarmotha oil, gurjun balsam, jasmine, rose and cashmeran, on a base of patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver, musk, amber and oud. Tempest was mostly influenced by the work of William Shakespeare, in an imaginary alchemic way (calming Kings and sons, Ariel as the spirit of Mercurius), typical magicians of alchemy.

EAU DE PARFUMS - HAYAT, KEMI, LAYLA, LUNA

Hayat is one of the four eaux de parfum, constructed as a woody-oriental fragrance. The name Hayat means "life" in Arabic and it unites all elements of life forming the universe: water, fire, each and air. Its opening is tart and intense, created of bitter orange and saffron, delicately softened by aromatic lavender. The heart of the composition accentuates the beauty of spices with a blend of cardamom and cinnamon, combined with warm amber, while the base puts wood in the first plan by mixing oud, patchouli, cedar and nagarmotha.
Fragrance Kemi opens with woody flavors of oud and cedar, accompanied with warm oriental caramel notes as it develops. The heart offers scents of gurjan balsam, delicately sweetened with caramel, along with castoreum and civet, resting on a base composed of vanilla, sandalwood and wood. The name Kemi originates from an ancient Greek word which might come from an ancient Egyptian version of the name Egypt, based on the word kēme. Al-Kemi denotes Egyptian art and Egyptians call their land Kemi and they believed they were the most powerful magicians (alchemists) in the world.

Layla highlights spices and oriental flavors. Top notes incorporate spicy touch of cloves and nutmeg embellished with seductive flowers of ylang-ylang enhanced with cedar ruling the composition. The warm, oriental finish comes from scents of amber, vanilla, patchouli and musk, along with sweet aromas. Arabic word Layla means "night", and many studies and important formulas were connected with nights, since astronomy took an important part and influenced the alchemic processes.
The fourth fragrance of the collection, available as Eau de Parfum is Luna, which starts with fruity and juicy zests of peach, apricot, lemon, mandarin, black currant and apples, with smoky shade of incense, green notes and spices. The heart poses contrast with a floral union of iris, rose and jasmine, while character is provided by cedar and leather. The base of the composition offers a warm and velvety trail of amber, musk and vanilla. In Italian and Latin, Luna stands for the moon. In this case, alchemy and astronomy are closely connected. Traditionally, each of the seven celestial bodies of the solar system has been closely connected with one metal since the ancient times. Luna is associated with silver.

PARFUMS - JABIR, 'ILM

Fragrances Jabir and 'Ilm were introduced in perfume concentration, in 50 ml flacons. . JABIR IBN HAYYAN has been considered the "father of alchemy," and he introduced a scientific and experimental approach to alchemy. He envisaged experimenting and many chemical processes, such as filtration, which leads to alcohol distillation. He is one of the founders of the perfume industry. The fragrance dedicated to him is calledJabir. Top notes of this oriental-floral composition incorporate pink pepper accompanied with freesia and violet aromas. The heart of the fragrance highlights the beauty of floral scents of peony, rose and lily of the valley, while the oriental-woody base is created of patchouli, oud, vanilla, musk and elegant vetiver.
'Ilm is a fragrance completely dedicated to oud and provides three shades of this precious ingredient. Top notes encompass Indian Assam oud, replaced in later stages by oud from Bangladesh in the heart, while the base accentuates sophisticated aromas of oud from Laos. Ilm in Arabic means "knowledge" and explains the development of science during the golden age of Islam.
The price of Extrait 15ml is 242 eur, parfum 50ml costs 323 eur, while eaux de parfum available as 100ml is priced at 343 eur. Collection KEMI is presented on the website www.kperfume.com

by: Sandra Raicevic Petrovic

"Since 1861, Italy has united the identity of a people who love to define themselves as poets, saints and seafarers, with an extraordinary talent for creativity written in their DNA. Developed from a love of aesthetics, an artistic heritage feeds and refines creativity and pervades every aspect of Italian life. 150 years mark an important anniversary for Italy and Xerjoff is
celebrating this moment with the release of XJ 1861, an homage to the grandeur and glamor of our home country."—Xerjoff
At perfume exhibition in Milan—Esxence 2015, Xerjoff presented for the first time its collection of three perfumes dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and it is inspired by the wealth, beauty and heritage that this country possesses. The collection of XJ 1861 encompasses three fragrances: XJ 1861 RenaissanceXJ 1861 Zefiro and XJ 1861 Naxos, each of which provides a part of beautiful Italy. Renaissance celebrates this period in Italy, Naxos Sicily, while Zefiro celebrates eternal Rome!

XJ 1861 RENAISSANCE

XJ 1861 Renaissance provides a luminous bouquet of aromas enchanting us with the freshness of the citrusy presence of tangerine, Calabrian bergamot, lemon and petitgrain. The base contributes to the depth and created the body of the composition with woody shades of patchouli, cedar, amber and musk to round up the composition.

The composition of Naxos opens with classic, airy and fruity citrus notes of bergamot and lemon surrounded with gentle and calming lavender shades. The heart blends sambac jasmine with cinnamon, cashmeran and honey, whose romantic trail is enriched with masculine accords of tobacco and tonka from the base. Vanilla Summer: Providence Perfume Co.'s Provanilla and Tauerville Vanilla Flash

by: Jodi Battershell

This is a tale of two vanillas, from two very talented perfumers, offering two different takes on this classic ingredient.
I'm generally fond of vanilla scents, as are most people. I tend to reserve the gourmand "cake frosting" vanilla scents for wintertime and holiday parties. Earthy/spicy vanillas are in heavy rotation for me during autumn. In spring and summer, vanilla is usually a complementary note in a lighter floral, fruity or musk-based fragrance—bring on the beachy combos like suntan lotion-y coconut and vanilla or piña colada-esque fragrant cocktails!
Two new vanilla fragrances reached me in the space of a week and they're challenging me to re-think my vanilla fragrance strategy for the upcoming warm weather.
Providence Perfume Co.'s new Provanilla (say "Prov [as in Providence] Vanilla") is composed entirely of natural perfume ingredients. It's the first vanilla-focused fragrance from perfumer Charna Ethier, whose perfumes are always winners in my book. PPC perfumes have proven time and time again that "natural" does not equate to "simple," "short-lived," "uninteresting" or "ugly." (Yes, there are some people who still believe this.) Providence Perfume Co. has something for nearly every taste: classic Floral (Orange Blossom Honey or Hindu Honeysuckle), heavy-hitting Oriental (Cocoa Tuberose or Osmanthus Oolong), traditional cologne (Bay Rum or Branch & Vine), classic oakmoss-laden chypre (Moss Gown) and even fruity floral, which can be a challenge when using only natural ingredients (Mousseline Peche or Summer Yuzu). A true vanilla scent nicely rounds out the Providence Perfume Co. offering.
I have observed that perfumerCharna Ethier (left) is a master at perfume sleight-of-hand. Hindu Honeysuckle, for example, beautifully captures the sweet aroma of the delicate orange flower with not a drop of honeysuckle in the formula. As it happens, honeysuckle does not give up its aroma for essential oil production, so Ms. Ethier worked her magic to replicate the gorgeous scent using sweet Indian Jasmine Sambac, vetiver, rose absolute, botanical musk seed, bergamot and Indian coriander. She worked magic again in Violet Beauregarde, capturing the delectable sweetness of blooming violets by using ylang-ylang, jasmine, mimosa and violet leaf.
(Violet Beauregarde also pulls off a "bubble gum" effect, which is no less magical.)
Provanilla includes five varieties of vanilla, coconut pulp, rose, balsams and myrrh, for what the house suggested would give a clean aquatic effect and a unique new twist on vanilla. (Another of Charna's gifts: trend-spotting. Or perhaps I should call her a tastemaker? Provanilla was in the works for almost a year before launch and she somehow anticipated the aquatic fragrance revival we're experiencing this spring with the likes of new releases from LoeweArmaniPG Collection Croisiere, numerous aquatics encountered at Esxence, etc.)
Aquatic indeed. Upon first whiff, my husband asked, "Melon?" If I didn't know of Charna's dedication to using only natural ingredients, I would have guessed Provanilla contained Calone, that popular melony-aquatic note of many a 1990s fragrance. The fragrance indeed opens with a melony blast. A little bit sweet, a little bit ozone-y. Vanilla is definitely here, but Provanilla is more about the ocean than about the suntan lotion I wore while laying on the beach. I don't detect rose as an individual note, but there's an earthy touch of the balsams and myrrh throughout the scent. It reminded me a bit of New West, sans the chypre dry-down. The scent is fully unisex and both my husband and I have enjoyed its sunny summer vibe.
Provanilla is an eau de parfum but it wears more like a parfum in terms of sillage and longevity. On bare skin, the pure vanillas emerge about six hours in. Sprayed under clothes, the scent remains rather linear and still has the prominent melon/aquatic note, 12 hours later. It has amazing longevity, considering many synthetic scents don't even last 12 hours. Two little spritzes was more than enough sillage for the workday, too.
And now for something completely different. (But still vanilla!)
Andy Tauer's new venture, Tauerville, offers a new creative outlet for the perfumer, and for more than just perfume. The Tauerville offering includes scarves based on original paintings made by Andy. We can add "visual artist" to the list of his many skills and talents. Watch Andy at work in the video below.
The first Tauerville fragrance, Rose Flash, was launched in limited release in 2014. Rose Flash is back this year, along with the next fragrance in the Tauerville series,Vanilla Flash, which was just launched in April.
Andy explains the concept behind the new series: "Tauerville is a playground for innovative ideas presented in a down to earth approach. Therefore, you can expect some of the best creations using the best raw materials a perfumer can get, at a great price, offered in a 100% Swarovski-free zone." From Tauerville we can expect fragrances that don't quite fit the traditional Tauer Perfumes model, in terms of distribution, scarcity of ingredients for larger-scale production and/or in terms of mood. "Tauerville is also funville. Enjoy!" says Andy.

Image: Tauerville
Vanilla Flash, like Rose Flash, is available as a 10 ml roll-on or a 30 ml spray atomizer. Rose Flash was a parfum, but Vanilla Flash is an eau de parfum. If you're familiar with any of Andy's previous works, you know already that Andy's creations have incredible sillage and longevity at any concentration. I can hardly imagine a parfum of Vanilla Flash and I think the roll-on and eau de parfum concentration are actually well-suited for the ingredients in this fragrance.
Vanilla Flash features spicy notes, bourbon vanilla, rose, patchouli and tobacco. Any of these components alone could have produced an overpowering sillage bomb, but in the hands of a skilled perfumer like Andy Tauer, the result is quite different. Vanilla Flash is— dare I say it?—a rather soft and cozy fragrance.
Rose and patchouli are carefully dosed to temper the sweetness and strength of vanilla and tobacco. Vanilla and tobacco and the spices together could have equaled "Santa's pipe" [or "Christmas candle"] but instead, the overall effect is a pleasant, comforting vanilla and tobacco aroma with earthy nuances and moderate sillage. I rolled on the perfume over my favorite not-quite-pulse points (back of each wrist, décolletage, back of neck) and enjoyed my own personal vanilla-tobacco cloud throughout a workday, with just a touch-up on the back of my wrists again for my evening out. The fragrance never overpowered and it took on a salty sun-baked skin quality, which mingled nicely with the dominant tobacco note as the fragrance dried down.
I have known other Tauer fragrances (for example, Sotto La Luna Gardenia andIncense Rose) to survive on sweaters sent through the washer AND dryer, and Vanilla Flash isn't that tenacious, but that's not a bad thing. It's 100% recognizable as a Tauer fragrance, but the scent's softer aura means I won't have to wait until snow and the winter holidays to enjoy it.
Thank you to Providence Perfume Co. and Tauerville/Hypoluxe for the opportunity to try the new scents!

Perfect Gardenia: Teo Cabanel's Lace Garden

by: Miguel Matos

I had a revelation during the days at Esxence in the Teo Cabanelbooth—Lace Garden. The newest fragrance from this French brand is delicious and refined, joyful and luxurious. Caroline Ilacqua, the owner of the brand, had shown me the first trial version of this perfume a year ago and I was immediately attracted to it, but the final formula was perfected and finally the perfume is launched in the market. This fragrance is different from all the others in the Teo Cabanel line but it follows the signature style of the brand—classic, timeless and elegant blends of the best materials available. The brand has compositions that range from the orientals and ambers to some fresh citruses and aromatics and also florals, but this one, Lace Garden, stands out for its sheer beauty and its creamy gardenia facets with green touches, which come from the magnolia leaves.
Miguel Matos with Caroline Ilacqua at Esxence 2015

While working with Teo Cabanel's in-house perfumer Jean-François Latty, Caroline finally found what she wanted. “The idea was to do something for spring, something that could really target all markets because we are quite successful in the Middle East but also in Europe, so sometimes it's hard to do fragrances that can appeal to all our customers,” explained Caroline Ilacqua. “We did the job with Barkhane which is a bestseller in all our markets. This time I wanted to go for gardenia, it was something I had in mind so I talked with Jean-François Latty, our perfumer, and he thought it would be a good idea if we added tuberose and magnolia leaves for the green touches. The inspiration comes from the place where I live, Fontainebleau, where the company is also based, 60 km from Paris. I was born there and it's the fifth generation of my family. I think it's a beautiful environment, we have a castle, the forest, the richness of nature ... I wanted to go back to the roots of Fontainebleau with the chateau and the French gardens I love so much.”
Château de Fontainebleau
As for the image, this is the first time that Teo Cabanel meets the influence of fashion and couture. “I met someone incredible, Guillaume Michel, an emerging french fashion designer. He found the concept interesting and he works with very high-end materials, just like we do, for his brand Iris Cantabri. He works with embroidery and everything is handmade. That's his dress that you can find on the picture (below). We did a very beautiful partnership with him for the movie and the picture. He loved the fragrance because it is in the spirit of his brand, too.”

Lace Garden is a fragrance that comes as another classic gardenia theme made in a very contemporary style. This is gardenia in its most glorious scent. The perfume is respectful to the nature of the flower and even the addition of tuberose is not sufficient to turn this into a Fracas kind of thing. The creaminess of the fragrance is what caused most impact to my nose. Almost impossibly elegant, this careful balance of white floral, green and cream is comfortable, refined and uplifting. I guess it reminds me of a softened and perfected Michael Kors Michael (another love of mine) where the tuberose is silent and gardenia is the star. There is a watery effect which comes from the transparent green notes and also a smell of hot skin in the background which may come from the combination of vanilla, powdery notes and woods. Somehow this mixture that starts slightly citric/ylang, going into the tuberose/gardenia/green leaves and later on powder/vanilla can be opulent but airy, romantic but also sexy, sweet but fresh ... I guess that everything depends on the balance of contrasts but the result is not a battle of ingredients. It's more like a happy sunny spring afternoon in a lush garden. Take it as just a personal opinion, but I think this may the best gardenia fragrance I have ever smelled.

Jul et Mad: Golden Ages of Ancient Civilizations

by: Serguey Borisov

The avant-premiere of The White Collection by Jul et Mad Paris at Esxence 2015 was made March 27, with perfumer Luca Maffei, who was involved in its creation. In order to smell the perfumes even earlier, I made an appointment with Julien Blanchard and Madalina Stoïca-Blanchard one day before.
Serguey Borisov:
Good morning, Julien and Madalina! So happy to meet you again, in Milano, presenting the new perfume trio! Please tell us why the collection was called "The White?"
Julien Blanchard:
There are so many great explanations for the collection to be The White Collection. Our family name is Blanchard, and our nickname is White. Our friends calls us like that: “Oh, we go to dinner at The Whites!” So we named our perfumes The White collection. Also white is the color of a new start, and of purity and innocence, etc.—because we wanted to express the essence of what we are, our souls, and make it on the next level of sincerity: what defines us, what we like to share with others. And it makes sense to us to change the color. It's the new part of Jul et Mad which is different from the first part, which is our Classic, or Signature collection …

Serguey Borisov:
I remember, they were designed to tell the story how you have met and became a couple, a family …
Madalina Stoica-Blanchard:
Now we decided to step away from our personal happiest moments whcih we shared with our customers. And now we want to share our new collection, and each perfume in it is about who we are, what are the things that we love, and things that inspire us. Those things that had always been our passion for both of us.
Serguey Borisov:
Why did you choose for the perfumes such oriental names? GarudaNin-Shar,Nea … not to mention the GOLD and white design and crystals…
Julien Blanchard:
We decided to devote the first three perfumes of The White Collection to the passion I share with Madalina—the passion for the ancient civilizations of the past. So we devoted
Nea to Byzance, Nin-Shar to Babylon and Garuda to Angkor Wat. And all of these civilizations were mighty, rich and opulent at their peak, as it can be seen in the great architecture in their former capitals and their most luxurious jewelry in museums of history, so we decided to make a more sumptuous grand design. I would not say that we made the perfumes to be as rich as Byzantium Basileuses, Angkor Wat and Babylon Kings, but we were inspired by the most great ancient monuments like the Angkor temples, Ishtar gate of ancient Babylon and Hagia-Sophia in Istanbul. Sure, we have visited all those ancient cities to be inspired.
Serguey Borisov:
How did you meet your new perfumer, Luca Maffei?
Julien Blanchard:
Actually, Luca visited us at our stand at Pitti Fragranze last September. At the time we were already working on this new collection, but we are always open to every new proposition. So we told him that he could make his own versions for the briefs.
And right after his first proposal we decided to continue working with him, so he won two briefs, for Nea and  Garuda. The third brief named Nin-Shar was won by Sidonie Lancesseur of Robertet, because the company is famous by their extraordinarily great raw materials of rose, and Sidonie is great in rose perfumes. And as we know Nin-Shar was a goddess of flowers, plants and fertility in Sumerian mythology, so if we had to build The Hanging Gardens of Babylon we cannot escape the most beautiful roses, especially Damask rose of Turkey.
Serguey Borisov:
Would you say that The White Collection was made with UAE customers in mind, or were you oriented by the oriental trend?
Julien Blanchard:
Well, we are not presented in Emirates yet, so it's definitely not the first reason. But I think that we have had the oriental trend in mind, and it's going pretty strong now everywhere, in the European and Russian markets, too. As you can see, a travel spray is added to every 50 ml bottle which is our brand's signature, so there's a small secret compartment for the travel spray hidden under the bottle in each coffret made of lacquered white wood (piano keys color). And one more thing: we have refill bottles now. We made them for each fragrance from both collections for our regular customers, as they already have the coffret and do not want to buy second or third—they just want some more of the perfume they are addicted to. And we also made a mini-bottles of perfume instead of samples you could buy from our website—we called them Love Dose.
Serguey Borisov:
Now let's smell the perfumes!
Madalina Stoïca-Blanchard:
The perfume inspired by Byzance is called  Nea; it's named after the Holy Church Nea Ekklesia (Renewed Church), that was built in the Golden Age of Byzance, in the 9th century. The perfume is a gourmand that is also oriental, but it's very elegant. When Luca Maffei of Atelier Fragranze Milano contacted us, we expressed our wishes and ideas to him. We really wanted the perfume to be rich and elegant, but without a heavy gourmand feeling alike Loukhoum or other oriental sweets. In the perfume the gourmand part is expressed by dry notes of dates and dried plums, with vanilla and caramel in the sillage. Also Nea is great for its fruity Jasmine Sambac and Damask Rose accord in heart. The base notes are woody (Cashmeran and Patchouli) and sweet (Vanilla, Benjoin, Tonka beans, Ambroxan), so Nea is a very long-lasting flowery gourmand perfume. I think it really should be our bestseller actually—'cause it's my favorite perfume now!
Serguey Borisov:
So sorry to say, but too feminine for me …
Madalina Stoïca-Blanchard:
The second one is inspired by Babylon civilization, its name is  Nin-Shar. Nin-Shar is the Goddess of Gardens or Plants in Sumerian mythology. She is the daughter of Enki, God of the Waters, and Nin-Hursag, Goddess of Fertility. So we decided to take Rose as a queen of garden flowers and recall the Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders for the ancients.
Serguey Borisov:
Smells like rose with a woody base of patchouli …
Madalina Stoïca-Blanchard:
Yes, Sidonie Lancesseur from Robertet used a very good quality fractionated Patchouli component from Robertet, to contrast with the most beautiful Rose absolute from Turkey that Robertet has and she even used some Rose liqueur in the sweet top notes. The base is also woods, Benzoin, Vanilla, Musks that are very complex again—when I close my eyes it feels like a drapery of really heavy, dark red velvet. It's a huge unisex rose, and Sidonie Lancesseur is famous for her modern rose interpretations, as she made Cruel Intentions by KilianDangerously in Love by Kilian,Rose Chic Hayari and more. Sidonie used to be an apprentice of Michel Almairac, the perfumer who loved rose so much that he wanted to insert some rose note in everything (he created all the new rose range for ChloeVoleur de RosesRose Infernale Terry de Gunzburg, and the new Ivoire Balmain). So he managed to pass a very special relations with this note to his apprentice, I believe.
Serguey Borisov:
Well, it's a really nice and well-done perfume, and the rose is unusual with a boozy start and a berry-like and powdery heart. I like it much better than Nea as far as I can wear it myself.
Madalina Stoïca-Blanchard:
Thank you! So the third perfume, Garuda, is inspired by Angkor Wat, the old temples lost in the sea of Cambodian forests. We did not name it as Wood or Oud Something, as it's not our signature way of naming, Garuda is half-bird and half-human, the mythical God of birds that probably has come to Khmer mythology from Indian legends. Garuda was the deity that carries Krishna in the battle with Evil, and was fighting with the enemies of Krishna. Actually we were inspired by the moment we experienced in Angkor Wat, when we were at galleries where all the walls was covered by Garudas, there are hundreds of them on the bas-reliefs. And when the sun settled down, all those Garudas turned golden in color—just gorgeous! That was the image that inspired us, actually.
Luca Maffei based the perfume on Cambodian Oud, with a lot of Saffron and Cashmeran. And you know what? He just won the brief of this perfume with his first proposal! We did not even change it! We just added some color to the perfumes to make them more intense and oriental. To add some passion, voila! The red-orange color just fits our White concept of ancient civilizations' opulence much more—it has sensations of old GOLD, rubies, velvet, luxury, etc.
All the perfumes are in Extrait de Parfum concentrations. We made them in the highest possible concentration for our perfume formulas as we have Rose absolute, Jasmine Sambac ...

Serguey Borisov:
And the last question: after the collection's pre-launch premiere today, when and where are you going to launch it?

Madalina Stoïca-Blanchard:
