Brioni (2009) by Brioni

So, finally I was able to try this expensive, sought-after (and discontinued?) “gem”. I’m usually quite a fan of tailors/bespoke brands fragrances, they often seem to put some more budget and care in their products, and seem able to infuse them with some true sense of class and discreet elegance contrary to many other designers - not to mention niche. To this extent, Brioni is not an exception and would be surely worthy a normal high-end designer price. Is it worthy *that* price I see on eBay and online shops now? Absolutely no. Not at all. It’s as much nice as far from being particularly memorable from any extent. It is basically a really decent, refined masculine citrus-woody fragrance with some smoke, cedar, lavender, some balsamic and crisp herbs and spices – shortly, a really classic citrus-green cologne with a classy Mediterranean vibe and a subtle woody-soapy bone-structure. A competent, classic “sunny” scent with some smoky wood and an above-average refined presentation. But still, really nothing more thant a good designer, something dozens of other fragrances are as well – either designers, or niche’s “designer in disguise”. From some Hermès, to some Dior (Eau Sauvage line in particular) to some recent Guerlain (Coriolan meets Homme L’Eau Boisée), to Boellis, with a sprinkle of Kenzo too - bearing in mind you can almost get one for each, at the total price of a single Brioni Eau de Toilette. Unremarkably solid, with a completely insane price tag.

6,5/10
From the moment I smelled the new Brioni I knew there was something classic about it. I had smelled this before somewhere. . . . and then it hit me - Patou Pour Homme Prive. The fabled classic fougere from Jean Patou that was abruptly discontinued in the 1990's has a magical lavender note tempered by galbanum, bergamot and other greens then mellows out with coumarin and oakmoss. Well guess what, Brioni is a very smooth Italian constructed classic mens scent that has a beautiful lavender dominant opening altered by bergamot, galbanum and vetiver and then is smoothed out with patchouli and settles on a base of tonka bean softened and dried with oakmoss. The opening and closing are exactly like the PPHPrive classic. I tried them side by side and the Brioni is smoother while PPh Prive is a but fuller with age. Prive has iris and possibly a hint of sandalwood missing in the Brioni. But by scent alone could easily be a cousin, if not a fraternal twin to Brioni.

I think the Brioni creation could also emerge as a classic fragrance and it definitely smells good enough to be treasured by many. As with all things Brioni the price is rare as well - asking $250 (110 ml.) or $500 (300 ml.)!!! The few who can afford this will enjoy it!

Even long after application, the two fragrances smell very similar. Brioni is a wonderful traditional mens lavender based fougere scent. But it is not simple. It has notes of lavender, lemon green notes, earthy vetiver, silvery patchouli, soft hay like tonka and leathery oakmoss. It bears seamless construction and the transitions befit the tailoring of the house of Brioni. But my overall impression is to be reminded of another by gone classic - is it a reincarnation of or just a memory of Patou Pour homme Prive?

Chanel Chance, Chance Eau Tendre & Chance Eau Vive

Chanel Chance Eau Vive

Have you noticed the trend of young women dying their hair gray? It can be startling to see a baby face capped with grandma’s hair. Sometimes it comes off as chic. But sometimes it’s an epic fail, almost as unsettling as politicians who dye their hair nut brown when Mother Nature clearly determined it should be gray — or gone. Mutton dressed as lamb, and vice versa.
To me, Chanel Chance plays this game. It doctors a big girl’s perfume for little girls by simplifying its heady oriental notes, freshening it up with citrus, and targeting its marketing to younger women. It’s like Guerlain Shalimar drawn as a kid’s cartoon and squirted with sweet musk, or likeThierry Mugler Angel with less verve and voluptuousness. To me, Chance feels off-kilter — or worse, banal. But, like dying your hair gray, it has its fans.
Chance, created by Jacques Polge, launched in 2002. Its notes include jasmine, orris, patchouli, musk, vetiver and vanilla. Chance’s signature is grapefruit plus patchouli plus vanilla plus musk, with negligible florals. The grapefruit and patchouli are clean, and the musk is sweet and vaguely nauseating. In the heat (and we’re under a heat advisory right now), it’s a loaded pistol. It dries down to ambery patchouli, and it wears a long, long time.
Chance is the sort of fragrance that could entrance a young woman looking for something “sexy” before she has the confidence to understand that sexy isn’t something you put on. It’s also the sort of fragrance you can find in a dozen knock-off versions at the drugstore, although they won’t have Chanel’s elegant packaging and cachet.
Chance’s flanker Chance Eau Tendre came out in 2010 and was also developed by Jacques Polge. Its notes include grapefruit, quince, hyacinth, jasmine, amber, cedar, iris and white musk. Eau Tendre is a soft, sheer fragrance that smells to me like banana, strawberry, sweet musk, and a touch of pepper. It has a gentle sillage and would suit a shy teenager. Or a shampoo. Eau Tendre vanishes on my skin within an hour, even with the whole sample vial dumped on. I smell little relationship between it and Chance, Sr.
Chance’s latest flanker, Chance Eau Vive, just came on the market this year and was created by Chanel’s new house perfumer (and Jacques Polge's son),Olivier Polge. Eau Vive is a sheer fresh grapefruit and is my favorite of the trio. Its notes include grapefruit, blood orange, jasmine, white musk and vetiver. Eau Vive is tart and citrusy with grapefruit and orange, but it’s not as bracing as a cologne. It holds a touch of its fruit’s sweetness, but it’s tempered by pepper.
As Eau Vive fades — and it fades fast — it settles into a clean musky vetiver with none of Chance’s cloying sweetness. In fact, besides grapefruit, it has very little to do with Chance. To use Robin's test, would I buy it? No. But I'd use it, probably to freshen my sheets, if it were given to me.
I have a lot of respect for Chanel. They’re giving their fans what they want, I guess, and keeping their market broad. Clearly, I’m not their target market. If you are, please comment!
Chanel Chance and Chance Eau Tendre Eau de Toilette are $122 for 150 ml, $97 for 100 ml, $77 for 50 ml, and $60 for 45 ml. Chance Eau Vive Eau de Toilette is $97 for 100 ml and $77 for 50 ml. Chance also comes in Parfum, and 7.5 ml is $115. Chance is available in most department stores.

Perfumed Horoscope November 2 - November 8

by: Hieronimuss

Yet another week that will heighten our ability to understand and accept, but this time we are practical and hopefully proactive about it. Masculine and feminine energies conjoin in productive down to earth ways (Venus Mars conjunction in Virgo).  As long as the basic understanding in our relationship is anchored, this is the time to set a new tone in our relationship where both sides can freely express what will make them happier together. This week we are recommending outstanding fragrances by Designer Malin+Goetz.

Aries

If you somehow feel that there is too much going on at your work, maybe you didn't prioritize well. There is still a chance to pick and choose. It’s much better to prepare than to walk into unproductive conflicts. You know that you are the only one who can be right, but they don’t know it. Pushing them will greatly aggravate things, but if something needs to be finished, you will need to play all or nothing. From Malin+Goetz try Lime Tonic.

Taurus

If you've been daydreaming about having offspring all signs lead to this week. It is not that simple of course, but the idea is that unless we are very creative ourselves, and able to recreate our lives, we invite children to bring us back in touch with the source. If you're into taking risks this would be the week to go crazy. From Malin+Goetz try Synthesized Musk.

Gemini

It’s impossible to simplify anything, so looking at your home situation you will just need the patience but also a sense of direction where it all needs to go. If you are unhappy with your family, it’s time to see how you can resolve it. You've never had a stronger nesting feeling, where everything needs to click into feeling comfortable, or you don’t feel productive. From Malin+Goetz try Petitgrain Tonic.

Cancer
This is the week where ideas are born and firmly projected onto the future. If you are honest with yourself, you will admit that some kind of a new beginning is long overdue. Wrap your mind around it and start planning. It could be a move, it could be starting your own family, it could be a separation from your current family, on friendly terms hopefully. From Malin+Goetz trySynthesized Lotus Root.

Leo

The previous weeks have brought proof that you are truly outstanding and capable of much more than even you suspected. This week it all culminates. You will either develop strategies to share your unique individuality, or you will feel like an over-energized lion in the cage. Don’t overdo anything, magnetize. From Malin+Goetz try Synthesized Geranium Leaf.

Virgo
There is no hesitation this week. I dare you to not get involved into anything: soon you will see that it’s impossible. You can now make the best out of pretty much any situation, as long as you show understanding and be careful how you’re wording it. You act like a big magnet this week, and some may try to seek your help. Be careful not to overextend yourself, but absolutely show that you care. From Malin+Goetz try Citron Vert.

Libra

There will be a big gathering around you with many questions. At first you will need to share how you feel, and it should not be difficult to make it sound positive. You can tell everyone that you simply need time to answer some of those. Don’t let anyone rush you.  The absolute worst scenario this week is that you find out about the infidelity of someone you trusted. No matter how you turn it, this week you need to dig into your spirituality and stay above it all, but work on answers within yourself. From Malin+Goetz try Petitgrain.

Scorpio

It is interesting probably even for you to observe how your dreams about the future and your very efficient pragmatic approach work so well hand in hand at this time. You may look at it as the journey towards success and recognition, but what is truly exciting is that some of the friendships that you are making now will become a part of future self-discovery. From Malin+Goetz try Dark Rum.

Sagittarius

This week any possible dramas at your career front will culminate. In your shoes I would prepare for anything or anyone that may take advantage of you. Extend yourself, show good will, cooperate and give them a lead, you will not go wrong, and you will in the process avoid a lot of stress. Let everyone else be right, and just keep stating how much you love to do what you do. That will give you the best protection. Be careful not to mix up personal and professional issues. From Malin+Goetz try deodorant Eucalyptus.

Capricorn

This week will bring closure on your recent journey towards a greater spirituality. You will again become more practical and it will not be just a routine, but you will understand what is needed to be as specific and concrete as possible. There is no better person than you to be around this week. From Malin+Goetz tryRum Tonic.

Aquarius

Sharing is not always an easy task. The trick is not to suppress how we feel, but to somehow bring it into a conversation with a partner and hope for understanding. This week may become something of a cornerstone where you can learn how much you can tolerate, and it may all just serve to show you the many benefits of having a partner. From Malin+Goetz try Moroccan Fig.

Pisces
You should be able to find your partner very proactively pursuing joint plans this week. Don’t spoil the game and subdue your questions for now. It’s really time to get what you want, and if you still have doubts after this week, there may be a chance that you actually don’t know what you want.  From Malin+Goetz tryCannabis.
