Sisley Soir d'Orient: How to be Timeless & New, Delicious yet Not Gourmand (2015)

Soir_d_Orient_sisley.jpg
The latest launch by Sisley, Soir d'Orient, is said to be inspired by a childhood memory of co-founder Isabelle d'Ornano kept from a time when she was visiting the gardens of the Alcatraz in Sevilla. She was then struck by the scent of the Seringas as it intensifies at dusk. This is the magical hour for olfactory sensations, as we know since l'Heure Bleue: the sight diminishes while the sense of smell becomes more sensitive. The new fragrance is also influenced by the notion of "Convivencia", a reference to the multicultural practice of sharing artistic and cultural traditions among cohabiting communities in Mauresque Spain...
Soir d'Orient eau de parfum mixes the sparkling elegance of Eau du Soir (1990) with a new oud mood, and while it could have lazily ended into a forced homage to the unavoidable king perfumery material of the day, it brushes past it, retaining some of its smoky trail while amping up its own delightful and delicious chypre personality (the latter nuance is perhaps new: if the new scent is delicious, it is never gourmand). In other words, it seems as if Soir d'Orient has borrowed some of the intensity and depth from the slow-burn sensation of agarwood but instead of losing itself in it, comes out brighter and more luminous from the encounter. It is, again, as if oakmoss has learnt something from oud but does not give up its own palette of foresty and aromatic sensations, which here are further typified by Iranian galbanum.
This is no voyage to the heart of darkness but rather a cruise on the Nile where you stop, muse and go back to the boat and your certainties, never losing your sea legs. It is a very stable reinterpretation of the original composition which feels at the same time deep enough and well-thought out enough to never come across as unnecessary or contrived. Quite to the contrary, a spark happens, a fruitful detour is taken and the original comes refreshed out of this new encounter which is presented as a floriental chypre by the house.
The composition, originally by perfumer Jeannine Mongin, is a priori a quintessentially elegant chypre perfume, one to be worn at a soirée at the Opera but with no trace of egocentrism to it. By this we mean that if it alludes to the crystal chandeliers and golds of, say, a Palais Garnier, it is no diva or attention-seeking entity itself. It is too well-balanced for that. This is no show-business stage diva but rather the scent of those who go watch and listen eagerly to divas.
To this reviewer, it seemed it had lost some of its lustre when Soir de Lune arrived, by the same house. The latter is such a perfect chypre that Eau du Soir looked a bit pale in comparison to it - and even less refined. Now, thanks to a very mature reworking of its formula, it smells a bit spicier, showcasing a beautiful, noble Turkish rose but it also smells like its own self, ony richer and renewed. All the new nuances are subtle and very well dosed.
If you like a classic - even a timeless - truly qualitative and elegant chypré perfume, both dry and lush, this is one to put on top of your wish list.
Notes: Italian lemon, saffron accord, Iranian Galbanum / Madagascar black pepper, Egyptian geranium, Turkish rose / Somalian incense, sandalwood accord, Indonesian patchouli.

Untold_Luxe_Arden.jpg
Elizabeth Arden have released a new version of Untold (2013) called Untold Luxe, which is presented as the first pure parfum entry in this collection, confirming for fall-winter 2015-2016 that the brand are more generally speaking putting their faith in opulent, luxurious-feeling florientals for women, also with Always Red...
It's been some time already that you can observe that florientals have become increasingly popular, something akin to becoming the new fruity-florals of the day in terms of ubiquity.
"Made for the woman who indulges in everyday extravagance, UNTOLD LUXE reveals the opulent and luxurious side of a woman.
Perfect for moments when only the very best will do, UNTOLD LUXE is the first Parfum to launch in the UNTOLD Fragrance collection."

Mûre Et Musc Extrême Gets A 24 Carat Finish Inspired By Château De Versailles

MURE_MUSC_EXTREME_150_ans.jpg

L'Artisan Parfumeur have partnered with Eric de Meyer, head of the Château de Versailles cabinetmaking workshop, to create a limited-edition artisanal collection of Mûre et Musc Extrême to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Parisian department store Le Printemps for the Holidays season...
Mure_Musc_Extreme_Or.jpgThere are 30 numbered flacons of Mûre et Musc Extrême eau de parfum carefully decorated by hand with 24 carat gold leaf.
It's the same technique and spirit that you can admire at Château de Versailles. Hopefully it should age well although it does not appear to be a refillable flacon. What a shame.
Called the 150 ans du Printemps edition, it will be available from the end of October 2015 exclusively at 64 Blvd Haussmann, 75009 Paris.
Each 100 ml bottle is priced at 195€.

Tom Ford Black Orchid Eau De Toilette Revisits Its Own Modern Classicism (2015)

Black_Orchid_edt.jpg

American fashion designer Tom Ford is launching a new iteration of his modern classic Black Orchid eau de parfum (2006), which now comes in Black Orchid eau de toilette concentration with a new aromatic twist counting on the power-emitting tuberose to make sure this edt is not lighter, but different....
"Black Orchid Eau de Toilette is a distinctly different encounter with a more open, immediate expression. The custom-grown Tom Ford black orchid instantly takes center stage, inviting you inside in a way never before experienced in the classic signature fragrance."
Black Orchid has an instantly recognizable olfactory signature, so pushing it to be even more direct is going to be interesting to experience. How American a virtue too!
The composition opens on top notes of Black Truffle, Ylang-Ylang, Bergamot and Black Currant leading to a heart of Black Orchid, Black Iris, Black Plum while the base features Lotuswood, Patchouli, Coconut, Cinnamon, Balsam, Incense, Vetiver, Sandalwood and Vanilla.
Known for his adherence to a bold, retro-made-modern aesthetic in perfumery, you can nearly always expect something that will make you feel like you came straight out of a movie classic when you wear a Tom Ford jus. Ford is also a film director, incidentally. In fact, if TMC is your kind of cable TV channel, chances are you're probably going to mesh with his perfumes.

Burberry Mr. Burberry & My Burberry Black: Hoping for Mr. Right (2016)

mr_burberry_perfume.jpgBritish fashion house Burberry have announced they are planning two new fragrance launches for 2016, Mr. Burberry and My Burberry Black...
The first one is the masculine counterpart to My Burberry, while the second one develops a more "sensual" side to My Burberry.
The brand is said to still be on the lookout for a star perfume which epitomizes the success of the label.
Mr. Burberry is a reworked woody, herbaly fougère whose formulation was entrusted to perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. He is well known for his modern fougère Le Mâle by Jean Paul Gaultier. It's, in a way, like asking a skilled specialist surgeon to take care of your ailment and hope for the best.
The eau de toilette opens on top notes of zesty grapefruit, tarragon and cardamom leading to a core of birch leaf, nutmeg oil and cedarwood while the base rests on sandalwood, vetiver and guaiac wood.
The ad campaign will be fronted by Josh Whitehouse.
Simona Cattaneo, senior vice president of beauty at Burberry said that the composition is "inspired by the heritage of British male perfumery," She added that,
"Mr. Burberry is a structure of a classic aromatic fougère that has inspired so many famous fragrances, but this has been totally remodeled and remastered to introduce a radically contemporary creation in its proportions and ingredients,"
Launch date: April 2016
My_burberry_visual.jpg

My Burberry Black, a flanker to My Burberry, is also signed by Francis Kurkdjian. It's apparently not considered as much of a major launch and test for the brand. The eau de toilette is said to open on jasmine flower seguing into a heart of candied rose and peach nectar, and drying down to amber and patchouli.
No visuals of the bottle are available so here's a redux of a behind-the-scenes for My Burberry with Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss.
Launch date: February 2016

Sweet Dreams 2003 de A Lab on Fire por Thierry Wasser

Sweet Dreams 2003 A Lab on Fire Compartilhado

Tabacora Parfums Chariots of Love: Salim, Anarkali

by: Sandra Raicevic Petrovic

The new niche house of Tabacora Parfums, with its official headquaters in Poland, presented their first collection Chariots of Love which includes the fragrances Salim and Anarkali. What is very interesting about the first fragrances of the collection is that they are offered as attars closely inspired by traditional Arabic perfumery. The wish of the house of Tabacora Parfums’ creators was to present precious fragrances in elegant flacons; their compositions are pieces of art that will invite us into an inspirational exploration of the world of perfumes.
The exclusive collection Chariots of Love is an olfactive presentation of love from all parts of the world. The first fragrant pair takes us to mysterious India, where it leaves us in an embrace of a refined, olfactive aura. According to the brand, "Notes of wood, in an intense and balmy way, seduce and warm the composition. A manifesto of bitter notes comes as an announcement of a tragic love. Balance is brought by floral notes symbolizing beauty of a passing moment."
Salim was developed as an homage to the strength of love, where flowers of iris and rose are united with saffron to provide love in a royal style. Papyrus and gurjum balsam in the heart create a special blend with musk and patchouli exuding closeness, while the wish to realize dreams about timeless love are encouraged by warm amber. The precious signature of the composition symbolizes strength and power originating from precious oud, ensuring the warmth and depth of the fragrance.
Anarkali is an oriental fragrance which puts oriental notes in the first stages. As the leading star of the composition, oud with its dark and brassy aromas accentuates the strength of emotions, moments when your heart beats faster and stronger. The composition was created as a blend of Artemisia, cedar, gurjum balsam, cypriol oil, sandalwood, amber and labdanum, blended with powerful oud to illustrate the fire of love that is never extinguished. This oriental union orchestrated by oud speaks the name of your beloved one – as pointed out by Tabacora Parfums.

Bonjour, Monsieur; New from Frederic Malle

by: Juliett Ptoyan

We have wonderful news for all Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle fans: at the start of the year, the brand will launch a fragrance in collaboration with Bruno Jovanovic titled Monsieur. A hallmark of Monsieur is its incredibly high concentration of patchouli: over 50%; that's the same role tuberose played in another classic from the brand - Carnal Flower.

The PR office of the brand also states that the fragrance is made in a neoclassical manner as a counter to widespread, olfactive fast fashion; it's inspired by the style of Alfonso de Portago, Mark Birley, Jose-Luis de Villalonga and Gianni Agnelli, the main seducers of the 20th century.

The composition starts with fresh sparks of tangerine which later mingle to syrupy notes ofrum absolute and then transforms into a sea of patchouli at the heart of Monsieur. A substantial dose of cedar and incense provides mystical vibrations. Hints of vanilla andmusk round out the edges of the fragrance and gives its brutal part a touch of elegance.

This is Bruno Jovanovic's second work for Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle; the first was Dries van Noten which also has a noticeable patchouli character.

Monsieur will be availiable in January or February, 2016; the cost of a 50 ml bottle will be $200, and a 100ml will be $300.

We will also publish a longerarticle about Monsieur closer to the date of launch.

COLLECTION L'HOMME: THÉ BRUN BY JEAN-CHARLES BROSSEAU

Nose: Pierre Bourdon
Year: 2005

What an odd scent this is. At first, Thé Brun smells actually quite as a faithful, vibrant, extremely pleasant representation of some traditional Chinese tea (I thought of the Oolong, too). Genuine dark brown leaves out of the bag. Quite a complex and really vivid structure of earthy, pungent, dry nuances blended with an uplifting fruity-herbal-balsamic heart and some really mild sweet-vanillic-floral nuances. Now, the odd part is that to my nose there’s at least two other major accords which smell at the same time perfect, and completely random; a really bold, fairly cheap and almost acrid sort of musk-hedione base (sort of a damp, grassy, slightly milky and extremely musky accord with a hint of pungent fruitiness) and a greyish, ashy-rubbery note, quite synthetic as well, the same exact kind of ashy-mossy rubberiness found in Bulgari Black, or in several works by Rasquinet (notably the MiN NY line, or Bois d’ascèse). It’s a dark grey, dusty, salty yet slightly camphorous feel similar to ambergris, which for some reasons, goes just perfectly with the brighter earthy-herbal tea heart of the fragrance and the sort of “lactonic” musky-green accord - which is quite bold as well, with also nuances of tarragon and bamboo (and some woods too, but I can’t detect them in detail). I know it may be hard to imagine how Thé Brun smells overall, and in fact it’s quite a unique and complex blend – not necessarily a good thing (but well, it kind of is here).

So basically, for me Thé Brun smells initially and for quite a while, like a sort of intricated hybrid between something like O de Lancome pour Homme and something like Bulgari Black, both gravitating around a grey-brownish balsamic heart of woody-earthy dry tea leaves. Quite fascinating overall, honestly a bit screechy but for some reasons, with a really peculiar and overall fascinating feel of “something smells wrong, but I can’t stop sniffing it” (most surely it’s the fruity nuances meeting the rubbery-ashy ones causing that). It feels like a bizarre mosaic of diverse inspirations – the archaic heritage of Oriental tea, the smell of a moldy grass field under the rain, and a whole range of artificial smells of rubber, ash, dirt, damp wood, wet concrete. So well, now that I think of it, it may make sense to connect these inspirations and imagine a shabby suburban teahouse in some desolated Chinese metropolitan district. Somewhere you can still drink an excellent cup of tea, just not in a postcard setting, but rather sitting in front of a crippled window looking at uncultivated grass bushes erupting out of an abandoned parking lot. I’m not entirely sure whether Brosseau wanted to evoke such a post-communist forlorn atmosphere, but it’s still better than the usual Oriental clichés in perfumery.

Anyway, back to the actual smell: pretty linear for a while, until the grassy-herbal-tea heart progressively vanishes and on the other hand, the ashy-musky base becomes warmer, gentler, in a way absorbing the top notes as if the whole tea-herbal stuff evolves and disappears as a result of an “infusion” among the base notes. At this time some of the screechy “oddness” is gone, and Thé Brun gets surprisingly refined and soothing, with a discreet smoky-musky presence with a sprinkle of amber yet still a bit grassy and balsamic, lasting quite long and projecting just fine.

I’m not entirely sold, but this is surely quite worthy a sniff.

Feromone pour homme (Pheromone for man ) de La Via del Profumo

Feromone pour homme (Pheromone for man ) La Via del Profumo Masculino

BELOVED MAN BY AMOUAGE (2013)

Meh...

Year: 2013
Noses: Alexandra Carlin and Emilie Coppermann

Beloved Man opens as a pleasant sort of contemporary aromatic-fresh fougère, a woody scent with spicy-floral notes, a green accord (not listed, but I do smell something herbal, balsamic and pine-y). I also get something like a soft, smooth and subtle leather note underneath. The opening is fresh and vibrant, with a nice head accord of round and fruity citrus and bergamot notes (and elemi, which is basically only a generic candied feel), well blended with cedar and the aromatic, salty earthiness of vetiver. In the middle, violet, amber, spices (cloves, cumin), perhaps other flowers. Amber and violet above all provide a cozy sense of mellow warmth. As other Amouage scents, it has an “expensive-smelling” radiant brightness, and is surely pleasant and refined, although also quite a bit synthetic (not in a good way). Plus, nothing really original: again, like other fragrances by this brand, it shows a quite evident inspiration from several late 90’s/early 2000s masculine mainstream scents. Moving on from the opening, once the fresher side tones down, it becomes a darker woody-spicy scent which to me seems pointing towards a couple of “golden-era” Gucci scents. Notably, underneath Beloved Man I feel a sort of faded ghost of Gucci pour Homme I; just fresher, a bit more flashy, and with more Iso E Super, but the "spiced pencil sharpener" is quite totally there. For a while, the similarity smells quite clear to me, then on the very drydown Beloved takes a (slightly) different direction, becoming a bit more dry, herbal, with a more nostalgic and austere feel. Not bad for sure, so keep it and treasure it if someone gifts it to you; but nothing really new and surely unworthy the insane price.

AMOUAGE: SOME MASCULINES

Memoir Man (2010)

One of the nicest frankincense openings on the market: bright, rich, deep, resinous, masterfully blended with bitter green leaves, citrus, something pungent and candied-fruity (like elemi), vetiver, sandalwood, and something on the base which reminds me of castoreum, although it may simply be the “side effect” of vanillin plus woods, leather and citrus notes. Genius touch of dark rose coming and going. A sophisticated hybrid halfway contemporary woody-incense scents like Gucci pour Homme I and resinous-brighter ones like Maria Candida Gentile Exultat, with discreet echoes of classic “barbershop” masculine colognes – mostly because of a soft, and kind of “dark” touch of earthy lavender. Utter pleasure: Memoir Man is a balsamic, refined and cozy gem, stylish and crowdpleasing without smelling dull, shallow or generic, at the same time showing a really peculiar a nondescript sort of “enigmatic” charm. Creative but totally safe, appealing and versatile. Perfect leathery-balsamic greenish drydown with a prominent vetiver-tobacco accord, mellow and again, totally classy, on darker balmy-mossy notes - keeping that abovementioned barbershop-fougère inspiration. Raw but civilized, shady and fascinating, and totally well made and solid... still unworthy the crazy price tag, but really nice.

Journey Man (2014)

The opening of Journey Man is fantastic: a zesty, vibrant citrus-green accord with fresh herbs, pine needles, pungent spices (mostly juniper and pepper), a subtle fruity note on a velvety, shady tobacco-woody-leathery base – that common type of nowadays’ leather, glossy and “clean”, chemical and bright, yet mellow and pleasant, blending with tobacco to create a refined feel of black smoke well contrasting with herbs and citrus notes. This scent is peculiar indeed: it’s “black” and smoky on one side, but somehow it smells really crisp, bright and vibrant, almost radiant even if it’s mostly about "shady" notes. The feel is like going out dressed in black leather on a sunny spring day, with your dark outfit being enlightened by the sunrays and the azure sky. It also has a really clean look and texture, this meaning it smells quite simple and neat (not a flaw for me, as long as it smells good). Also, as many reviewers already noted, the connection to classics is evident, as Journey Man’s roots are clearly and strongly dating back to several leathery-smoky-herbal fougères, from Krizia to Eucris by Geo Trumper. The only thing I don’t enjoy is a slight but persistent sort of chemical-metallic aftertaste, but overall it’s really pleasant, especially for the first hour or so. Being quite linear, though, after a while it starts to smell a bit boring, losing a bit of the first-sniff “sensation”. Shortly a nice and well-executed tribute to an era, with a contemporary feel, undoubtedly good-quality ingredients and a solid composition. Sophisticated and “smelling expensive”, yet versatile, easy-going and safe all-year ‘round. The price is completely insane, but at least the scent smells nice, so you won’t regret it (that much).

Interlude Man (2012)

The structure of Interlude Man is of a classic leather-velvety fougère with herbal and incense notes (on the polished-synthetic-woody side), reminding me of other contemporary niche fougères for man like Fetish pour Homme by Roja Dove. Decent and pleasantly plain, and a bit derivative too, as it basically smells like the drydown of any leathery masculine scent from the '70s or the '80s, even if (obviously, I'd say) less powerful and compelling. Nonetheless, it is surely balanced and pleasant, the leather is refreshed by balsamic notes and softened by incense, green notes and a hint of amber - all a bit plain and synthetic to my nose to be honest, but pleasant, refined and classy ("it smells expensive", shortly). Given the pretenses and the price, it's just not that worth it in my opinion.

Jubilation Man (2008)

A jubilation indeed! Rich, balsamic, fruity, floral, masculine, dense, spicy... bittersweet tasty berries, foggy mist, honey, resins. Boozy vanilla drydown. A real circus of notes and accords, perfectly-balanced in a light-and-shadey, crisp and elegant scent, more consistent than one may think judging from the complex composition. Somptuous and sensual Oriental decadence at its best. Moderate projection and great persistency.

Fate for Man

Fate Man opens with pepper, cumin, immortelle, a sandalwood-cedar note (“sweet pencil sharpener”, basically), softened by a warm balsamic-ambery accord, resins, incense (nice, rich, dusty olibanum), sweet anisic-licorice notes and saffron, well blending with a tiny rose note. I also get tonka and vanilla on the base. Basically Fate Man is a warm and spicy balmy-woody scent with a powdery-sweet breeze, essentially built around the “pencil sharpener” woody accord played on a darker, spicier tone - earthy-boozy immortelle, incense, saffron, dark balmy notes. Soft, smoky, spicy. The drydown is a bit cheap in my opinion, it lasts long but showing some unpleasant sort of rubbery-petrol nuances. Fairly pleasant overall, but also a bit uninspired and “already-smelled” (think of any niche scent with woods and immortelle), plus with a couple of “plastic” nuances that in my opinion lower the overall quality. It’s nice, but among the safest and least fascinating Amouage masculine scents for me.

EXTRACT OF MYSORE SANDALWOOD BY CRABTREE & EVELYN (1970)

I was really eager to put my hands on this mythical vintage “Extract of Mysore Sandalwood” by Crabtree & Evelyn, since it is apparently considered among the most vibrant and truthul representations of authentic Mysore sandalwood in perfumery, as it shall contain some. Now, I am not an expert of sandalwood, so I can’t comment on the degree of authenticity and quality of sandalwood here; all I can say is that this fragrance smells terrific, period. Easily the best scent I’ve ever smelled among the ones containing “sandalwood” in their name. It’s just magic, and it truly makes you consider other sandalwood scents in perspective.

At first, there’s a tremendous blast of balsamic, slightly anisic and creamy sandalwood with a drop of citrus and an impressive “material” woody texture, joined by a really peculiar sort of earthy, almost ashy and even slightly fecal undertone; it’s truly subtle, but it’s there, creating a really vibrant dark and organic shade blending with the luminous, soapy, balmy uplifting creaminess of this wood. It feels like an instant Polaroid of a sandalwood plantation, which I’ve never even saw in pictures, so it’s just my imagination speaking - but that’s the beauty of fragrances. It’s soapy and exotically sweet, but now I see what “synthetic” means in relation to sandalwood – it’s a whole different kind of sweet soapiness the one you smell here. It’s just natural, deep, imperfect. It doesn’t pierce your nose or go right into your stomach, it’s not musk-driven, it doesn’t smell like laundry machines or cheap candies. It’s the kind of sophisticated, weightless woody sweetness you maybe got in the drydown of some vintage masculine scents like Egoiste or Tiffany for Men, just in a free, pure, complete and more “amplified” form here.

The evolution is quite dynamic then, and I guess that’s another key point of difference from any synthetic sandalwood scent. And again, it just feels as the natural course of an “organic” smell – it becomes warmer, dustier, drier, lighter too but it doesn’t entirely fade away. It just gently sits on skin with a peaceful, yet intricated harmony of soapiness, creaminess, dry woodiness, and a whole range of “rural” nuances coming and going – from hay, to indolic nuances. It gets darker and smokier for a while at first, then progressively breezier and brighter, and also simpler, more purely soapy and balmy. More and more discreet as well as time passes, but long lasting. Finally, just a note: don’t expect anything complex though, as this is a truly simple fragrance. Lots of nuances, but still gravitating around almost a single accord. Outstandingly, sumptuously, richly simple and quintessential, if you get what I mean, easy to love like a piece of perfect blue sky.

So overall, a true gem in my opinion. I must say though that the subsequent “Sandalwood” which Crabtree and Evelyn made in 2004 (discontinued as well, I think, but easier to get) is a truly remarkable and successful effort of bringing back some of these feelings and nuances of the original Extract, in a synthetic sandalwood fragrance. Some, if not most part of the magic is gone, and indeed you get a flatter, more artificial texture, but the final smell is amazingly close to this. The Extract is still worth its money in my opinion, since besides the smell there’s just a fantastic “experience” flowing out the bottle, but “Sandalwood” comes just right after with its tolerable compromises on quality. I own both and despite they smell similar, they don’t feel redundant.
